We're sooooooo excited. We've just booked a motorhome for the middle two weeks of August to tour Scotland. We are planning a round trip but at the moment have no plans about where to go.

I thought we could plan it around any recommendations of great days out, campsites, beaches and things to see and do.

The DC are 8,6 and 3 and very active.

I would love any recommendations from MNetters.

Oh gosh yes Mull is fantastic. We went there last year for a couple of nights without DS and spent the whole time sighing oh DS would have loved this.

There are some nice B&Bs and hotels with family accomodation as well if you google they should all come up. Or if you are feeling particularly brave there is a place where the ferry lands that has pre erected tents that are somewhere in between tents and canvas houses, sorry I'm not describing this well. Your DCs would love them as it would be a real adventure, plus cheap to stay in. If you go up that way then do stop in The Green Welly for your lunch.

frasersmummy · 20/03/2008 22:28

Oban is nice.. distillery does a tour .. with wee dram at the end for mum and dad

and I have to agree that they green welly stop is one of the best services I have been in

going north from oban the scenery on the west coast is fabulous

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 22:32

loch ness, they'll love looking for nessie!!

if you work out roughly where you're going then we can give you ideas for certain places depending on weather and whats going on in the area

for example I think you might be too late for the highland games in some places but others have different events on during the summer

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 22:33

sounds fab by the way, would love to do it with mine but dc3 due in july so won't be entering into a campervan environment this summer lol

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 22:40

this might give you some ideas too

whatsonwhen

MorocconOil · 20/03/2008 22:45

No idea of route yet. Thought I'd ask on here first for places to visit, then plan a route around things to interest the DC. From past experience we have learnt a good holiday means one which keeps the DC happy.

I'm on the look out for good campsites too if anyone knows of any. I think we'll do a combination of commercial ones with pools/playgrounds and then basic ones with beautiful but wild surroundings.

The DSs are already full of questions about nessie, so we'll have to go to Loch Ness.

I'll print off all your ideas and get the Rough Guide and Cool Camping out to try and plan a route. It feels like such an adventure. Can't wait.

Still a bit worried about midges as we'll be camping really.

Only thing about going over to the islands is that it can be quite pricey taking over cars or campers. Return car to mull £51, camper over 5m-8m £77 and 8m-10m £102.Calmac timetables

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 22:48

tis pleasure am queen of scotland you know and not above a bit of self promotion lol

KristinaM · 20/03/2008 22:49

thanks KristinaM!

MorocconOil · 20/03/2008 22:52

Scramble. It's not going to be a cheap holiday. We would quite like to go to Orkney but it'll cost a small fortune and it's a long, long way.

MorocconOil · 20/03/2008 22:54

Thanks Kris and Your Majesty. I'll get hold of the Avon bath oil.

We got talking to a local with kids at the Mull ferry.

They had parked their car at Mull, and hired a car for the day on the mainland said it was a lot cheaper than bringing their car over...

might be a tip for you ..

You can get your picture taken with the balamory bus in the glasgow transport museum .. and like all glasgow museums its free.. just in case you find it pours one day (well it is scotland!!!)

MorocconOil · 20/03/2008 23:03

We're definitely going to Glasgow for a day or two. I wouldn't go to Mull just for Balamory. If we go it'll be for a few days, so we'll have to take the 'house' with us. I hope the little roads won't be too small for it.

If going into the centre of Glasgow I would park elsewhere and get the underground in, parking a motor home would be impossible. Park at Ibrox stadium, drive into the grounds of the stadium and park round by the rangers shop (not on a match day , manned 24hrs and has CCTV cheeky I know. Shop will point you in the direction of the underground station.

Science museum in glasgow is great, but there are also a few free museums too. Glasgow museums.

The kids will love the transport museum, loads of vehicles, and a mock up of a glasgow street with a cinema and underground statio you can go in.

Kelvingrove (ground floor) lots of bits for kids in amoungst the grown up stuff and a mini museum to get hands on. Near underground.

The Scotland Street school museum has classrooms from different eras, appeals more to school age kids. Near underground.

Modern Art has a kids area with lots of activity sheets and helpful staff who don't mind your little darlings sprawling out on the floor infront of a masterpiece with a pile of crayons and a pile of A4. City centre

Peoples palace is a strange mix of stuff relating to the people of glasgow, everything form an mock up of an old steamy (washhouse) where the kids can put shirts through the mangle to and anderson air raid shelter complete with soundtrack of an air raid. 15mins from underground.

Scramble · 20/03/2008 23:24

BTW orkney would be a huge fortune .

Scramble · 20/03/2008 23:26

If you are going to the south West the caravan and camping site at Culzean is a stunning location and culzean castle is worth a visit.

Day trip over to Arran is good, leave the car and get the island bus to Brodick castle or if you have bikes it is a popular island to cycle round.

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 23:27

scramble do I detect a hint of weeg?!?

Scramble · 20/03/2008 23:31

No not a weegie, just spent a lot of time there, used to work there too, but I used to take the kids there a lot on the train for days out, so know my way around .

dizzychixies · 20/03/2008 23:35

lol! making me slightly homesick, musy pencil in a west end visit soon

MorocconOil · 21/03/2008 08:26

What's a weegie?

Saw Culzean on another thread and have made a note of it.

OP posts:
prettybird · 21/03/2008 08:46

A weegie is a Glaswegian.

There is a ruined castle in St Andrews, so there's one castle for you. Plus Edinburgh and Stirling castles - and Culzean.

dizzychixies · 21/03/2008 08:46

weegie = Glaswegian!

culzean is a lovely place, spend nearly every weekend down there as a child, the ayrshire coast is lovely and there is the electric brae nearby which will amuse the older kids, I still don't get it!
