Looking to book a trip for my mum’s 70th. She loves to walk and is fit and well. She lives in Cornwall so not the coastal path down there. Is there an obvious place which I could drive us to, then spend two days walking and be able to return to the car easily at the end? Or maybe somewhere we can base ourselves for two nights which have great circular walks from the place? I was thinking near West Wittering or Pembrokeshire but I don’t know either at all!

We’ve had good walking breaks based in Abergavenny and Brecon. Lovely hill walks and very civilised towns. Same with Monmouthshire and the Wye Valley. North Wales has fantastic, dramatic scenery-a good base is Dolgellau in the southern part of Snowdonia. Charming town plus wonderful mountain and estuary scenery. May be a bit far to travel from Cornwall. I don’t know the Pembrokeshire coastal path well but the beacons area of South Wales is lovely.

Thank you @MrsRachelDanvers ! I actually know the area around Abergavenny as we have had family holidays there - I agree that’s it’s lovely. I think North Wales would be a bit far for two nights especially we can’t be certain the weather will be good. We drove to the Lakes last year and vowed it was too big a risk to go for only a couple of nights as it rained the whole time and we didn’t see a single view!

Malvern hills if thats not too far to travel? Stay near the town centre and you can have lovely walks on the hills from your doorstep. Or a short drive to several different car parks to start your walk from (it's a pretty steep walk from town). Plenty of nice cafes and places to eat too.

Stay in St David’s. You can get the costal hopper bus to/from points on the Pembrokeshire coast path.
The Cross Hotel there is nice.

West wittering is very flat and not very exciting.

How about doing Walk The Wight in May?

Avebury to Stonehenge ?
Pembrokeshire is lovely

Pembrokeshire is gorgeous but surely a full day's drive from Cornwall?

I would head to Dorset, possibly isle of Purbeck. Chalk /limestone ridgeways , amazing prehistoric remains, stunning chalk cliffs, fossil beaches, nature - winter watch was filmed there. It's got everything!

My husband has done a couple of walking holidays with his dad using this company and they are excellent. They take all the hassle out of it for you and collect your luggage and move it on so you just walk with a day pack. There are some shorter ones like the Cotswolds but the itineraries could also give you some inspo
