Yorkshire Dales mini break without a car - doable?

Is there anywhere I could stay in the Yorkshire Dales that would have several good walks from the door (I’m thinking moors, 7-10 miles, nice views), a pub and a basic shop for breakfast cereal etc that I can get to without a car?

I can drive, but it’s a long way for a mini break and I would be the only driver. So potentially I could hire a car at a station or something, if it’s really not possible to do this by public transport.

Ooh, than you, I’ll have a look.

I found also found a village called Hawes, which seems to have a good bus service from mainline station and also good walks from the door.

Have a look at Gargrave too. It has a train station and walks from the village.

How about Skipton as a base? I did that once and it was really enjoyable. You could base a walk around going to one of the stations on the Settle to Carlisle railway and then walking to another.

Lots of ideas, thank you! I’m looking for moors / walks with some hills and views in them. If you know the area, which of these villages would be best for that? I’m less into river / canal walks, though I do love a waterfall!

There's always Malham, lots of lovely walks including the cove and Tarn, tourist buses daily and some nice pubs! You can walk over the old trails to Hawes and Settle
Hawes itself is lovely, especially if you like cheese! Ingleton is probably best for high walks, you can go up ingleborough and there are the waterfall walks too
Skipton is a town rather than a village and more canals than moors. It does have the advantage of good transport links though
Another alternative is Settle, you can then use the Settle to Carlisle railway to get onto the moors- Garsdale is remote!

You can easily get onto Ilkley moors from the rail station, Steeton and Sildsen station also gives close access to dales walks. Burley in Wharfedale is another good one. Skipton could be a good base to reach these places by train.

Check out the National Trust campsites with the camping pods. We stayed in one in the Lake District ones last summer (Boot) and did the whole thing by public transport from London, including a steam train! The campsite shop was really well equipped.

Castleton is lovely with lots of walks round it and only a short taxi from edale train station.

We came back from Hawes a week or so ago. Three good pubs.

I live in the Dales and I think one of the stops on the rail line between Skipton and Carlisle would be best (e.g. Settle, Dent, Kirky Stephen etc.) because then you'd have flexibility to get a train up or down the line for a chain of scene. The places I mentioned are all lovely places to stay, with moorland walks around them. Settle in particular would be perfect.

Malham wouldn't be great - yes it's very pretty and there's a tourist bus, but you'd find it hard to do a day trip to another area from there without a car.

Castleton isn't even in the Dales?

Ilkley / Burley are at the end of the train line that's they are on, so no good for days out in other bits of the Dales. (Ilkley also isn't actually in the Dales).

Castletown is very nice but it's Peak District rather than the Yorkshire Dales

Hawes is on the Pennine way.

And about 70 miles away.
