Any good alternative suggestions?

What are you looking for and where? What about AirBnB are you fed up with?

disappearingfish · 19/01/2024 07:29

Hotels? Actual B&Bs? Other holiday accommodation booking sites (which will often list the same properties).

LlynTegid · 19/01/2024 07:31

Hotels.

Make a small step towards people in holiday areas being able to afford housing, instead of someone's possibly tax dodging enterprise.

PrawnDumplings · 19/01/2024 07:59

Yes all of the above.
Was really looking for good site recommendations please.

Good site recommendations to find what?

A hotel - trivago
A b&b type rental - booking.com
Something a bit fancier than usual: secret escapes (to source the accommodation then book via one of the above as usually cheaper)
Something a bit different in uk. - canopy & stars

The problem is that nowadays air b & b is just another booking platform.

Many holiday lets are available via air b & b & booking.com and are cleverly marketed to be deliberately vague, so it isn’t immediately obvious if it’s a single person you’re dealing with or a company.

What's up with Airbnb?

SunflowerSeeds123 · 19/01/2024 08:24

I've noticed more property/holiday companies on there which defeats the original concept of it. I've stayed in a couple of, both very nice, but I feel guilty about taking a potential home from a local person.

I look at Hostelworld and Hotels.com. Booking is good but there's still some vagueness to the listings.

Deathbyathousandcats · 19/01/2024 08:25

I never use Airbnb. I loathe the whole idea.

Warmwoolytights · 19/01/2024 08:25

Both English Heritage and National Trust have holiday rentals available, some in cities. They are good quality and easy to deal with.

shearwater2 · 19/01/2024 08:36

I really don't care about the original purpose of Airbnb, just that it's a good booking platform as it allows you to search widely with different parameters set. I have also used booking.com, Secret Escapes, holidaycottages.co.uk and the websites of individual accommodation sites.

Definitely didn't want to stay in hotels with my dog and small children! Having a whole place to ourselves and self catering was key.

OP, I usually start by having an idea of where we'd like to go then research what accommodation is available in the area. But some sites are better than others. I use Secret Escapes when we've been given a voucher but otherwise it is a bit frustrating as it doesn't allow advanced searched or much filtering. We've stayed in some lovely places through there though. But when I'm interested in a particular hotel I'll still look up the Google reviews and Trip Advisor as well as those on the booking platform.

Much better than the days of having to phone round to see if places were available when you wanted to go.

Thank you! I'll have a look.

@shearwater2 thanks will check out secret escapes. I agree, hotels don't work for us with kids & dog either.

I always use Ibis hotels. Clean, cheap, soundproof.

Advice400 · 21/01/2024 07:36

I'd agree with your sentiment! It's a pity because the air b and b by us is lovely, although we live next door so I'll not want to stay there, but our personal experiences of staying have not been great and one was very poor.

We live in Cornwall and I would recommend the local holiday agents. Depending on where you want to go, it might take a bit of googling the town to find these, but we have a few excellent local families who seriously help their property owners understand what's needed for a holiday property. Or they are the family owners of a few properties which they run themselves fully aware of the rules and what holidaymakers want and need..you may also be able to get recommendations from locals for companies by joining the towns Facebook page.

I've also used holidaycottages and Marsdens successfully.
