Restaurant in London where you can hear your conversation

Meeting up as a group with some friends in central-ish London on a weeknight. We want to catch up with each other, that's the point of teh evening. Which means being able to hear what each other are saying. So many places are too noisy for this - hard surfaces, music etc and there will be 6 of us so that makes it harder. Don't want to spend a ton, the food just has to be nice enough - no need for gourmet or fancy. But we do want to be able to hear.

Please share your tips!

Browns BR Trafalgar Square - depends on your budget though.

Not BR meant near!

Le Garrick - get one of the booths.

The Wigmore is nice (attached to the Langham Hotel). Very civilised without being poncy.

Some nice ideas here! The Wigmore looks very nice. Civilised without being poncy is just what we're after!

No doubt too late for this get-together, but for future reference -

My friends and I wanted to get together for a quiet chat on a Friday evening in our lively city centre. I hit on the idea of going to a bar or restaurant in a theatre on a performance night. As expected, it was wonderfully peaceful throughout the performance aside from the brief crush during the interval.

I did check with the staff beforehand, just to make sure they wouldn't be literally hoovering round us after the interval, and also to find out when they intended to stop serving. They did stop serving shortly after the interval, but we were fine to stay on; we simply bought a few drinks to see us through.

Brilliant idea @saracen - not too late either. Funnily enough I had exactly the same thought but instantly forgot it - and now you have reminded me so thank you!! 🙏 The South Bank might work for us well, I am going to check out the websites. Rather fancy the Royal Festival Hall if it has a restaurant, fab building!

There's Skylon but not sure I'd return unless you're a big fan of foam served on a bed of hay and other such oddities. It was very quiet though.

@sep135 hmmm. Doesn't sound very filling 😅

I ate at Skylon in August, no foam and rather tasty and... Delia Smith was on the next table with 3 companions! That's quite a recommendation.
