Foodie and rural break with teen

Looking for a weekend break with DS2 (15) who loves food of all kinds, but dislikes crowds and cities so a city break is out!

Ideally would be towards the east of the uk and no further north than Yorkshire- either somewhere we can stay and eat nice food (eg a country pub with rooms) or a self catering place with lots of nice foodie places to visit. Previously has really enjoyed Yorkshire with visits to Wensleydale Creamery and many pub meals! Somewhere with a pool table / foosball table to hang out would be ideal. Thinking Yorkshire, Peaks, maybe over towards the Cotswolds?? Nowhere too spendy or swanky though.

Can anyone help with this very specific request??

What about Whitby or Robin Hoods Bay? Lots to see and do, and plenty of good places to eat.

Whitstable? (Oysters / seafood)

Suffolk (Adnams brewery, some lovely bakeries in the area, Aspalls vinegar - Tiptree jam factory in Essex on the way there / home).

Ludlow is very foodie

Chester?
Great food market, history, river walks.

I'm d look at Buxton. There's a lovely French bistro, plus plenty of others delicious food options. Holiday let's or hotels are fairly numerous in the area - if budget allowed the Crecent is amazing but otherwise hotel wise the palace is ok if you get a cheap deal and bring own swimming towels, just don't book the food as it's basic and plenty of places within 10 minutes to eat.

We went to the Lake District last year, there’s some amazing restaurants there and lots of open space for walks and hikes (or scenic drives if that’s not your thing)

wrappedupinablanket · 14/01/2024 12:19

I'd go to Malton, food capital of Yorkshire!

Pootles34 · 14/01/2024 12:19

I'd say not Whitby or any food festival, Whitby is always busy unfortunately! Masham is very nice, particularly the white bear, but maybe a bit near to Wensleydale if you want something different?

Brecon is beautiful and quite foodie, lots of lovely walks and little independent shops! Or Hay on Wye if she likes bookshops 😊

Malton in Yorkshire does nice food events. It's a nice market town and they sell themselves as being a foodie place. One of my friends lives there so I've been a few times.

ZenNudist · 14/01/2024 13:36

How about bakewell in the peaks?

CuteCillian · 14/01/2024 13:39

The Fish (Broadway, Cotswolds) has loads to do within the grounds and further afield, and a couple of great restaurants to choose from.

MegBusset · 14/01/2024 14:01

Thanks for all these great suggestions! Malton looks ideal - it’s not an area we’ve been to before, and perhaps we could nip over to Whitby for fish and chips 😋

Had a lovely weekend in Louth at Easter last year. Lots of interesting walks and architecture from when it was rich due to the wool trade. Very cheap both to stay and eat out. Not very upmarket but we loved it so thought I'd chuck it in as a suggestion!

Highlandcows · 15/01/2024 09:39

Stow on the Wold, Bourton on the Water, both lovely areas in the Cotswolds. Actually anywhere around there is gorgeous with country pubs galore!

Wtafis · 15/01/2024 09:41

Norwich, the food there is incredible, there was an episode of the food programme on it recently

Dasy2k1 · 16/01/2024 18:16

Come a bit further south to the eastern bits of the east Midlands. Melton Mowbray, Oakham and various places round there are all great foodie destinations and very much have the small market town vibe

North Norfolk has some amazing places you can eat. Lots if great pubs. Maybe wells next the sea or this place in Brancaster -The White Horse Brancaster Staithe
