Lyme Regis area holiday in wheelchair?

This year we would love to have a UK beach holiday and actually stay in the town rather than travelling in from a remote property. I was really keen on Lyme Regis (never been) but I’m in a wheelchair and will need to keep popping back for naps. I’ve been reading it’s hilly and so a bit impractical. Does anyone have any suggestions (ideally in that area but south west or Wales ok). I ideally want somewhere where we can get a property on the flat from the beach but not too tacky or run down with nice cafes etc. Is this impossible!? Alternatively does anyone have insider info on whether disabled parking spaces on the sea front in Lyme Regis get fill up during school holiday? Thank you

Yes. Went this summer. Car park including disabled spaces was rammed before 11am. It's beautiful but incredibly busy and incredibly steep. I think you'd struggle. I have a blue badge but had to park at the top and walk down. Headings back was incredibly hard work.

There's lots of lovely places around there but not sure about the beaches. Chesil is all pebbles. I think you could do LR if you get up very early ! There were holiday rentals by the beach. Quite grand houses though some of them. Anywhere further out is steep and hilly if you wanted to be in the town.

I don't know the area well but Sidmouth has a prom v close to the (sandy) beach and a hotel near one end of the prom. It does have steep cliffs either side but there are lots of cafés etc in town on the beach level. Not sure about small steps, gravel/cobbles or parking though, I'm afraid.

Lyme also has a long flat prom, so once you're down on it it's ok, and there is a small sandy beach as well as the pebbly one. Can you go for a "drive around" in google street view to get an idea?

@Mumteedum Thanks that’s helpful about disabled parking. We’re rubbish at getting out early which is why I was thinking of actually staying within walking distance. But beach front properties I’ve found in Lyme Regis that aren’t up a hill are £££

i have managed to find some apartments in Seaton and Sidmouth right on the sea front. Any opinions on either of these places please?

Sidmouth is nicer than Seaton. Seaton's beach is all pebbles and the town is smaller, with less in the way of cafes etc. Sidmouth town beach is pebbles at the back but sandy at low tide, and the town centre is not far away at all. There are also some eating places on the seafront. My mum is in her 80s and not very mobile and she gets around Sidmouth just fine.

Thanks all we’ve booked a place in Sidmouth right on the sea front. There seemed to be quite a lot of accommodation.

Sorry too slow!

Seaton has a great tramway and is flat but quite run down.

Have a look at Weymouth and Bournemouth.

Me too 😂

Sidmouth’s lovely. See if you can get to the Donkey Sanctuary for a visit.

Jumbojem · 01/01/2024 14:43

I was coming here to say Sidmouth or Exmouth. Both bigger and better (level) access than Lyme, flat seafronts and plenty of parking.
Hope you have a nice holiday.

Conwy and Llandudno are both very different but nice, Conwy has tight streets and foot paths but is doable, the harbour is lovely, its does have some central disabled parking. Top tip the street with the toy shop in is double yellows so you can park with a blue badge

Llandudno and nearby Rhos on Sea are both very wheel chair accessible

You could venture to Liverpool and Chester both wheelchair accessible too

Conwy Town is a world heritage site with an imposing thirteenth-century castle and walls. Conwy’s harbour, revolutionary Telford suspension bridge, …
