Cotswold

Never been to Cotswold, would love to explore picturesque villages. I have tried looking for cottages through Sykes, holiday cottages etc. Maximum stay - 2 nights in May. Cottages prices we are looking at around 500 plus for two nights.
Is there any cheaper way of exploring, please recommend any options?
We are family of 5.

A Premier Inn in Cheltenham as a base and visiting villages by car.
The Cotswold extends from Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire so you can choose which places in particular you’d like to visit. We’re in the Gloucestershire part of the Cotswold.

Thank you. As a beginner we are looking around Bourton on water, we prefer to see few villages on shorter distances. Hope this is good village to explore. Please recommend

It’s the Cotswolds. Plural.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 30/12/2023 23:15

Bourton🤭🤭, they regularly have to close the access roads in the summer, there are so many tourists.

LadyGeorginaSmythe · 30/12/2023 23:17

We stay at a caravan site in Broadway. Lots cheaper than a hotel!

Themostimportantpartis · 30/12/2023 23:19

They close the access roads in Bourton regularly in summer? No they don’t 😂😂😂

Bourton on the Water, Upper and Lower Slaughter, Stowe on the Wold, Moreton in Marsh, Bibury and Northleach, should give you a feel for the Cotswolds. Premier Inns in Cheltenham and Cirencester should be good for fairly cost effective accommodation.

saveplanet · 30/12/2023 23:30

Thank you@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads. We live 1 hour 45 minutes away from Bourton on the water. Premier inn is a great idea

Assuming you have a car, Cirencester is probably a good spot as a base, and not too far from a fair few pretty villages. It has much more of a small town picturesque feel than Cheltenham, and a budget hotel would be a more economical stay for you. Bourton on the Water and Stow on the Wold are pretty close together, and then you could go on to some Oxfordshire villages.

Theyvegotatrex · 30/12/2023 23:37

Cheltenham is a great base for getting out and exploring, as is Cirencester. Wherever you stay you’ll have to travel some distance unless you just pick one village and stay put. How long are you staying for? Do you want to do some walking? Are you interested in shops or historical sites?

They close the access roads in Bourton regularly in summer? No they don’t 😂😂😂

Only if they’re expecting a visit from Kerry Mucklowe.

sunshinecamper · 30/12/2023 23:43

Premier Inn in Chipping Norton too. Closer to Bourton/Stow/Burford. Worth comparing price. Also Travelodge in Burford if you just want a base not a cute cottage.

We have a car. we want to travel in May or June time. Maximum time - two nights. I have two weeks off in August - not sure whether the weather will be nice to roam around Cotswold streets. I have watched a few videos on YouTube, villages look amazing in the sunshine. I understand no guarantee of sunshine in UK 😁

My family is not in tranquillity and they would prefer pool etc. I think two days would be enough before they get bored.

Just came back, its a lovely area but I would plan a few activities for the kids so they don't get board

Sunflower2222 · 04/01/2024 10:15

Have a look at Hoburne Cotswolds - I’m sure there are lodges as well as caravans. A great base for touring the area, it’s not far from Cirencester and in the middle of the Cotswolds Water park area. Lots of stuff to do on site including 2 pools ( there is some work going on so would double check).

@Sunflower2222

I would definitely second the recommendation for Hoburne Cotswold Water Park especially if you have younger children.

It been quite a while since we were last there but I absolutely loved the place. As well as there being plenty of things to do at the water park and at Hoburne, it is a really central location to visit the touristy villages.

EffortlessDelegation · 04/01/2024 11:05

Another vote for Hoburne Cotswold Water Park, we had a lovely two night stay there with teenagers a couple of years ago. Lots of water sports on the doorstep, only a few minutes drive from Cirencester (which also has a small lido) and not too far from the villages you mention either.

saveplanet · 04/01/2024 19:59

Thank you. I will look at the water park

As our budget is pretty tight. I found two-night stay for £230 in one of the village inn and this inn is about half an hour drive from Bibury.
We will be definitely visiting Bibury, Bourton upon water. Please recommend other places.
