Anyone know Dumfries and Galloway?

We have the chance to stay in a lovely cottage near Dumfries at Easter. Are there nice places to visit locally? Ideal would be 3 diff places that we could spend 2-3 hrs in. DC are older teens.

Googling throws up Burns place which would be good. Anything else you'd recommend or towns good for a potter?

I would research a back up plan of indoor activities, as it's a beautiful part of the world, but can be very rainy. Take packs of cards too! If it's dry and sunny, it'll be absolutely magnificent outdoors at that time of year in spring

Paddle boarding is amazing around there

Galloway international dark sky park.
I’ve not been yet as my dc were too wee (or the weather wasn’t right) but this is on my bucket list for 2024. My dp lives near Dumfries and on a clear night, even there, the sky is awesome.

I go up a few times a year to see my parents. Frankly even in the summer it’s one of the greyest, ugliest places I’ve ever been. The houses are grey ( or brown) and a hodgepodge of thrown together styles. There’s less front gardens and it all looks very hard. Even the countryside has stone walls rather than hedging. There’s a river running through most towns it seems which I like but they don’t make pretty bridges.
The main road (A74) is long and getting anywhere takes ages. The road is used by all the traffic going to Ireland, so lorries for days.
The beaches are good and dramatic but often windy. I get fed of wrapping up in August to go to the beach.
Spring would seem the better time to go to catch the weather. My parents seem to get long dry and properly hot spells then. There’s stuff to see and do and parking is easier out and about. But all I can say is good luck and hope you have a nice time.

I love Dumfries and Galloway, we did a "castle crawl" there one which was fab. Definitely Caerlaverock and Threave castle are well worth a trip even if it's out of your way. Also although it is quite a bit further (maybe for next time) the mill of Galloway is amazing and the botanic garden at Logan is great too.

New Abbey is a pretty village. It's not very big, but has a mill. Forest of Ae and Mabie Forest also lovely

We stayed near Kirkcudbright, they have a small space centre, there is the cocoa bean factory, we also did watersports at Loch Ken. Absolutely gorgeous place!

That factory is brilliant! We did the chocolate making and loved it

One good thing about the region is that people who expect razzmatazz in a holiday destination, stay away.
Those that appreciate nature, wild landscapes, empty beaches, peace and genuine leisure experiences, love it.

Kippford is a lovely little village to visit. Has a "tree of the year" along the beach

We camped in Glentrool last December. The stars were incredible
