Norfolk?

Just planning our Summer 24 break. Looking at UK based holiday cottage for around £1k- £1500 tops.

We'd normally look at Cornwall or Highlands but I can't believe the cost for a week!! Isle of Skye in particular has dramatically increased in price.

So I'm looking elsewhere. I've been looking at Norfolk - where particularly would you recommend?

We want beaches, walks, plenty of dog friendly pubs and that's pretty much it!! Kids are teens and pretty amenable so we don't need lots to entertain them.

Which areas should I focus the search?

Thanks!!

Holkham is one of the most dog friendly places I’ve been. Lovely beaches and walks too.

Lovely! Thanks. That's exactly the sort of recommendation I'm after! Sounds perfect

We stayed in Wells-next-the-Sea earlier this year. It's near Holkham and lovely.

Whathappenstomyal · 28/12/2023 14:47

Wells next the sea and the area along the north Norfolk coast from there is gorgeous

Yes that coast is beautiful- have stayed in Burnham Market several times. Lovely but can't imagine it's much cheaper than Cornwall in summer season.

Winterton on sea is nice. Small village, very dog friendly and good walks along the dunes and beach. Near Great Yarmouth if you want a bit more "commercial seaside".

stockpilingallthecheese · 28/12/2023 21:16

Winterton is doggie heaven with the dunes, absolutely hours of beautiful walking and the beach is gorgeous. Not a ton to do but plenty of nice country pubs around, hire a boat for a trip on the broads (also dog friendly) and Hemsby is next door for some trashy English seaside fun (or Great Yarmouth a little further along for more).

Holkham/wells beach was honestly one of the most stunning places I've been. Norfolk is my absolute favourite place. It's incredibly dog friendly and the beaches are so much quieter than the West Country.

Also for dog friendly but lovely accommodation check out east Ruston cottages. They have a lovely selection!

Overcome2023 · 28/12/2023 21:24

Please don’t be tempted by Hunstanton. It is one of the most disappointing places I’ve ever visited, we thought it was awful and I am from a rough seaside town in the northeast.

ZenNudist · 28/12/2023 21:48

Sheringham is lovely. British seaside not too tacky. Also near Sea Paling. I stayed near Norwich Airport not too far from Cromer but inland which was equidistant for Norfolk broads and coast. Boating and cycling on the broads is so relaxing

Have previously stayed near old Hunstanton which is nice.

Wells next the sea

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 28/12/2023 22:17

Another vote for Wells

HopefullyHopeless · 28/12/2023 22:20

Blakeney

Blakeney

Seal-watching boat trip from Blakeney is wonderful

Another Wells fan. Get the bus if you’re only going a short distance from there such as Holkham though. The traffic can be terrible in the summer.

Ivyfarm.co.uk has barn conversions in Overstrand. Near the beach, outdoor pool but no entertainment etc. Easy walk into Cromer. Visit Norwich, take a boat out on the Broads.

HamHand · 09/01/2024 10:21

Agree with the Holkham recommendation, it’s my happy place and just stunning all year round. I think you might struggle budget wise though depending on how many of you are going, Norfolk prices shoot right up in season

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2024 10:31

With teens and a dog, if beaches aren't a must then you might want to consider a boat on the Broads rather than a holiday cottage. We've not done it in high summer though so not sure how busy it is then.

EdithWeston · 09/01/2024 10:32

Sheringham and Cromer are both lovely traditional Victorian seaside towns, and thoroughly recommend if you want a trad bucket and spade holiday (Cromer pier still has a Seaside Special variety show in its theatre - about the only show of its type still going)

But both have restrictions barring dogs from main beaches from Easter to autumn, so probably not for you to stay in, but you might like a day visit (teens could surf, you could walk the dog along the coast path to Overstrand and back)

If near Sheringham, then I definitely recommend the parkrun at NT Sheringham Park - dog friendly

Burnham Market is definitely Chelsea-By-The-Sea territory, so the nicer places will be £££

I would recommend here- not just this cottage but the whole complex, it is small and has cottages of different sizes, and is pet friendly, our dog loved it there.

The only drawback is you have to drive everywhere, although most people would be bringing a car anyway, and there is a 40 minute (nice) walk to a very good pub. Or ten minutes in the car.

Though it's inland the little complex is well-located for accessing the whole North Norfolk coast from Cromer to Hunstanton. 30 minutes to Holkham Beach which is amazing with a dog.

There is a lovely shared indoor pool and a games room with table tennis etc.

We liked being a bit away from the coast you can go out into the busier bits then have a little rural retreat when you come back.

Great Barn, East of England

A stunning barn conversion property set within a small rural complex, with shared access to a heated indoor swimming pool and a large games room with table football and table tennis, just 12 miles from the Norfolk Coast and 3 miles from a market town w...
