Two days in Rye

Have bought an overnight stay in Rye (At the George Inn) for DH and me for Christmas. Going in February. (So I realise it is likely to be cold!)

I've bought train tickets, and we'll arrive around lunchtime on a Wednesday, and will leave at some point on Thursday - probably after lunch. We only have to get back to South London, so the journey isn't too long.

Some of the places I've been looking at for meals don't open on Wednesdays, which is a bit worrying!

So any suggestions for good places to go? To walk around/see, as well as to go and eat/drink?

TIA.

There’s quite a few, you won’t find it a problem. Where you’re staying is pretty good. Webbes fish restaurant is meant to be good, as is Rye Sushi, but there are a good few besides. Have a wander and look at the menus.

The Globe pub is heading slightly out and is fab too.

If you like wine go to Tillingham for either dinner or pizza and ideally wine tasting. Taxis are about £10-15 one way.

have dinner at the gallivant

coffee / pastries at camber landing and a brisk walk along the beach!

BIWI · 03/12/2023 22:35

I'd love to go to the beach - just hope it's not too cold/windy/snowy!

I've done a seal spotting river trip from rye.

Also like the old fashioned penny arcade games in the tourist office.

Great chips from Mariino's chip shop.

Bought lovely earrings from an antique/ second hand jewellers on the high street called My Sweet old Etcetera.

Rye harbour and RSPB reserve. You can get a 8 min bus there and lovely walk along the beach. Visit Church Square and the view from the top of St Mary's is great - you can see across for miles. Try Knoops for hot chocolate. Hoof and Standard Inn are good to eat. The White House opposite the George for brunch is AMAZING. Lots of nice shops and antique places if you're into that

BIWI · 03/12/2023 22:55

How long does it take to walk from the town centre to the beach? And is it a nice walk?

I second ALL of this. Defo do the Rye Harbour beach walk

astridforty · 03/12/2023 22:57

Ahh you’ll have a lovely time, it’s gorgeous. Another vote for climbing the church - in sensible footwear/ clothes. I did it in a dress - I don’t recommend.

BIWI · 03/12/2023 23:01

Thank you all! Starting to feel a bit guilty about this. It's supposed to be a present for DH really, but actually it's somewhere I've always wanted to go Blush

Rye is gorgeous. Walk on the beach and over the fields to the castle. Great antique shops for pottering around, and FE Benson's house is sometimes open to look around (he wrote Mapp & Lucia series of novels, set in Rye - brilliant, if you haven't read them. I think his house is supposed to be what Mapp's house is based on.

Between an hour and hour and half to Camber depending how quick you are - lovely walk. The walk to Rye harbour isn't so nice as it goes through a slightly industrial area so 313 bus better to Rye Harbour, but then a gorgeous walk once you're there. William the conqueror pub is quite nice or the cafe at the RSPB reserve is good too.

Everything here, just perfect. Whitehouse breakfast is divine and we travel there regularly just for that. Simply Italian is lovely too, had some super meals there. Hoof burgers and freak shakes are yum. Food at the George is lovely too.

BIWI · 09/12/2023 08:21

Thank you! Good to hear about the breakfast place too, as I haven't booked us in for breakfast at The George.

Just hoping that the weather is kind to us in February for walking around. (Although I'm sure we'll manage to find appropriate hostelries if it's too wet/snowing!)

Well, interesting update! I booked us in, and wrote a card for DH, along with a guide book, and wrapped that for his Christmas present.

Opened a present from him, to find that he's booked us into Whitehouse later in the year Grin

Great minds and all that!

You guys are good at gift giving.

Hope you really enjoy it!

BIWI · 02/02/2024 15:06

So it looks like it's going to be a bit wet and windy next week, which is a bit of a shame.

We're booked into the Landgate Bistro for dinner.

Hopefully it will be better weather/more conducive to walking when we go back again in June Grin

How was your trip? What's the land gate bistro like?

BIWI · 16/02/2024 19:45

It was good - apart from the weather on the second day, which was not! Wet and windy.

Landgate Bistro was OK but sadly a bit lacking in atmosphere, as there weren't many other people there. The food was good though.

We had lunch on the first day at the Globe Inn https://www.ramblinns.com/ which was a really lovely place. And then on the second day we went to The Ship Inn https://theshipinnrye.com/

It's a pretty small place so we'd walked around most of it in the two days!

To get out of the rain we went to the Ypres Tower museum https://ryemuseum.co.uk/ypres-tower/ which was interesting.

When we go back in June, hopefully the weather will be better! We will, hopefully, venture a bit further afield as well - possibly even down to the beach.

Globe Inn is my fave place in Rye. The Sunday Roast is epic! Beach worth a visit when the sun is out! Get fish & chips after from Marino’s xx

notthefrontdoor · 18/02/2024 23:13

Sounds great! I went to the globe inn for Sunday lunch today as down in Rye and it was delicious! There's some really nice walks around Rye so hopefully the weather will be better in June.

BIWI · 19/02/2024 08:52

I hope so!

Resurrecting this as we're off for our second visit next week. We're booking dinner at the Union, and will (hopefully) get lunch at the seafood bar at the fish market on one of the days. It was closed last time we went. The weather forecast isn't looking too bad, so I'm hopeful we can get a walk in, either to the harbour or to Camber Sands.

Drpawpawspaw · 28/05/2024 17:20

@BIWI enjoy! I love a walk down the harbour, there’s a new cafe there too, not made it there yet X
