Hi, my DD is signed up for a week’s volunteering at a youth hostel. It’s residential and is a week specifically for DofE so the group will be all be young people but she won’t know anyone else there.
Are there any things she should take / safety tips we need to be aware of - it’ll be the first time she’s been away without either us or on a school trip.

I would say a personal safety alarm that she could set off in case of threat/ assault.
Sleeping bag rather than the bedding as it's zipped to the top.

It's no wonder we have a generation of teens who are anxious when this sort of advice is suggested.
She's staying at a youth hostel, on an organised trip. Please don't put the fear of God into her..

I regularly stay in one if sharing a room I would reiterate ear plugs you never know who will be a snorer and it’s rubbish not getting a sleep.

You’re seriously over worrying about this! She just needs clothes appropriate to whatever her volunteering activity is, a towel, toiletries, decent PJs (rooms aren’t often en suite so it could be a walk down the corridor to the bathroom), flip flops for the shower are a good idea and I’d probably take slippers to avoid having to wear shoes indoors all the time. Earplugs and an eye mask are essentials for sharing a room anywhere IMO and a torch might be useful, although she could probably use the one on her phone.

Oh my DD did this a few times and had great times.
I've stayed in many hostels and the only one I wouldn't revisit was St Paul's in London. Just because, security a few years ago was non existent and anyone could (and did) just walk in.
All the others have been absolutely fine.

I didn’t notice a problem with security at St Paul’s, but I did notice the bells!
