Help needed for trip to London

We (4 adults) are planning a trip to London in January. We have never done this before so looking for some tips.
One person at least wants to visit the Elvis Graceland exhibition and other than that we want to visit museums and see “the sights”.
We are trying to work out if it’s best to stay centrally (we have looked at some apartments on Booking.com) or stay further away and travel into central London each day, we will probably stay 4 nights but are flexible between 3 and 6 nights.
We are travelling South so if outside it would be North of London and would need good transport links. Someone has suggested staying near Heathrow but we don’t know how good that is as an option.

Where we stay will decide how we travel to London, outside it will be car and then use public transport each day. If we stay centrally we will get there by train but may drive some of the way and park the car up. We will use public transport each day.

We are confused by Travel pass, travel card, oyster, touch in. One person has a Disabled Bus Pass which can be used anywhere in England off peak, is this enough or does this need to be used with a London card as well. Do we need lots of different cards for different areas and different transport types. The more I read the more confused I get.

Thank you for any help you can give. Please remember we haven’t been to London and know where things are in relation to each other.

I've looked on StreetView and I think that listing is fake. There are no buildings like that in Monmouth Street or the neighbouring streets, there's no rear garden behind the buildings on Monmouth Street, and the style of window of the front bedroom doesn't match any on Monmouth Street. As for the price - £239 for 3-bedroom flat for 3 nights - totally unrealistic. The next highest property in that area that can accommodate 4 people is £510, and that's for a quadruple room (ie 4 people sleeping in one room) not a 3-bedroom flat.

Stay clear of that one!

The ad mentions an open air swimming pool. There is one nearby on Endell Street. There are gardens there surrounded by blocks of flats which look similar to the photos. The address 39 Monmouth Street is a small shop - possibly where you collect the keys?

Stanmore tube station has a fairly large car-park (434 spaces according to the website) and seems a popular choice for people who want to leave their car there and travel into London, @wooo69 - there's a maximum stay of 7 days. Sadly you have to pay, of course, but when don’t you these days!

It’s on the Jubilee line so goes straight into central London. If coming off the M1 it’s a relatively straightforward route to the station. Maybe worth thinking about.

@Halsall thanks I will have a look. After a quick scan of the info we can park free in a disabled bay as DH has a blue badge. £6 a day isn’t bad, we pay that for a couple of hours here.

Get a good street map, such as an A-Z, and study it In advance, to see what places are near to each other and work out routes. Also study the Tube map and see where Tube stations are on the street map.

Tube is best for covering longer distances quickly. Bus or walking is best for shorter distances and seeing London.

In the City, St Paul's is the big attraction and really needs most of a day to do it justice.

There are many other Wren churches in the City, all worth a visit, and free to enter, though donations are welcome.

Also free are the Guildhall Art Gallery and Roman amphitheatre.

If you like walking, have time, and are able, the walk east from the Tower through Wapping and along the river is interesting. Stop off for lunch at the Prospect of Whitby.

The Museum of London Docklands is also worth a visit. You can go there on the DLR.

Be warned that the South Ken museums and the British Museum are likely to be very busy at any time. It's best to plan to see a few specific things, rather than try to do the whole museum.

If you're in the Euston area, the British Library is worth a visit. They usually have a couple of free exhibitions.

Be aware that pickpockets and bag dippers operate in busy tourist areas. Take care to keep your bag zipped up and don't have anything very valuable on view. In a cafe, don't put your bag on the floor or hang it on the back of your chair.

You can spend a lifetime seeing the sights of London and still not see all of it. hope you'll be inspired to revisit often!
