Anyone know of a low ish priced self catering property to rent in Brighton?

Have decided against holiday parks as we need to be within walking distance of Brighton centre. But all the properties I can find are £500 plus for a week. We don't need to go in school holidays and are quite flexible about when we go but I just can't find anything!

You'll have problems finding anywhere within walking distance from the town centre unless you look on Gumtree and try to rent a house privately.

How many people is this for?

used2bthin · 23/03/2008 21:48

Sorry forgot to check this! Are you still here? For me and my parents and DD (18m). We can be sort of 30mins-40mins walk away its just we had such a problem with parking when we went before so just want to park the car and leave it. Hove would be ok for instance. Hadnt thought of gumtree though good idea.

When are you looking at coming?

I can put a note in my church newsletter if you like to see if anyone would consider renting you their house.

I'd be happy to as I go away quite a bit myself, but I only have a 1 bedroom flat which I don't think would be big enough for you all!

Consider using public transport as well which only costs £3.20 for unlimited bus travel and might widen your search a bit more.

used2bthin · 23/03/2008 22:09

Oh thank you that is really kind.Yes need two bedrooms but a lovely thought. We are quite flexible about when but I think end of May/beg of June is out as my parents are away. We don't need to be in school holidays either although its ok if thats when we end up going. End of June is probably the ideal time.

This one's at Seaford, you could bus in from there? £280 for the week of 19 Apr - after that it goes up and up until Sept when it comes down again - £250 the first week of Oct if you can wait that long!

WendyWeber · 23/03/2008 22:16

(£411 for June 21)

WendyWeber · 23/03/2008 22:22

Hove - £333 for 19 Apr, £409 3 May, then booked out/too expensive until Sept when it goes down to c £380.

used2bthin · 23/03/2008 22:23

Thanks it just shoots upwards from May to Sept doesn't it? Seaford would be ok possibly but I think it would need to be significantly cheaper to be worth while. Ideally we want to pay under £400 and don't mind if its not first class accomodation iyswim. Brighton just seems to mainly have v nice expensive places to rent. Love it there though, would love to live there one day with DD.

Ooh the Hove one is interesting though. I think we could walk in from there or is that unrealistic?

I thought it would be cheaper if not in school holidays but it doesn't seem to make a difference does it? Which is good really as they shouldn't hike the prices up then but I am surprised.

The Hove one is about 3 miles to the centre of Brighton, so a good walk, but doable!

The cheapest months relative to the weather, iyswim, are May and September - June is a lot more expensive than it should be, but is v popular with people who don't want/have to go in the school hols but still want summer. (I work for C4U so I have these conversations a lot )

brighton.gumtree.com/brighton/37/19590437.html

This kind of thing might do so long as you see it first. I live 20 min walk from town centre so am more than happy to check a few places out if you draw up a shortlist

ShinyDysonHereICome · 23/03/2008 22:33

Have you looked at this site?

Brighton Holiday lets

used2bthin · 23/03/2008 22:34

What C4U is it a travel agents? Had wondered about going to a travel agent to see whhat they could find. Thanks SDHIC too, I will keep an eye out for stuff on there nad its very kind of you to check places out. I am very envious of you living where you do!

It's actually in Portslade, but it's less than a mile to the local railway station where it looks like you can get a train into Brighton...

WendyWeber · 23/03/2008 22:37

C4U is shorthand for cottages4you, sorry!

used2bthin · 23/03/2008 22:38

Thanks for second link too, yes have been on that one and there were a couple of possibles I think though again all £400+ for when we wanted, I think that is maybe just what they cost at that time of year, saying that all that I have seen so far look very smart so am still hoping something not so smart(and therefore toddler friendly!)may appear.

OP posts:
used2bthin · 23/03/2008 22:41

Oh Cottages4you I think I've been on the website, so would you think £400 ish is probably the lowest we would find for that time of year? I suppose between 3 of us its not too bad. My Dad has been saying it'd be cheaper to go abroad as food etc will be lots if we eat out a lot but I don't want to go abroad this year.

OP posts:
used2bthin · 23/03/2008 22:43

DD keeps crying out so if I disappear I've gone to sort her out then go to bed. Thanks for your help though.

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 23/03/2008 22:44

Well, your dad has a point! UK holiday accommodation is a silly price compared with abroad - I bet you could find a nice little house in Picardy or Normandy for a lot less than Brighton, and have better cheaper food too (and bring lots of cheap wine back )

WendyWeber · 23/03/2008 22:49

Wimereux near Boulogne - 300 yards from the beach - £289.50 in June, and a Dover-Calais ferry would be about £70 on top through C4U.

(No good if Brighton's where you really really want to go of course )

used2bthin · 24/03/2008 09:01

oh that is tempting! I'd love to go to France but am worried about being in hospital(dd is a bit of a regular in hospital due to her condition and I often need to explain what it is to staff at hospital so would be worried as I can't remember any french!)I would love to go to France though and definately want to do it next year if not this one. Am pretty sure DD's support group will translate the emergency instructions for when families go abroad so it is just a case of me and whether I would wrry too much. I like the idea of bringing back wine, and cute French kids clothes for DD!
