Holiday prices gone mad in the UK

So we have recently just come back from a 3 night break in Scarborough which was kindly gifted to us so joined a how much it cost! Accommodation was a cottage. Nice, basic clean in the centre of town. 2 adults and 2 children.
We though about staying in the uk next year and as a comparison I put in next years holiday for 2 weeks in the same cottage. 3 grand!

Flights and accommodation to Spain doing it myself including car hire came in to less than this. (Not a package) It's a no brainer.
I understand prices have gone up but we were hoping to stay in the uk and save some money. This was just a normally run of the mill holiday cottage! Nothing flash. Dread to think how much we would spend.
I understand why the owners do because of rising costs. However, I know I booked similar cottages pre Covid and they were around but sure I could have booked a similar cottage for 800 a week. It's doubled!

@Kolnuts jet2 this time. Always love their customer service. Flew from Bristol. The drive to Heathrow/Gatwick is slightly shorter than Bristol for us, but the prices are cheaper with jet2, service fab and we do drop and go car parking very cheaply at Bristol, which overall makes it quicker. Had a brilliant deal once to Fuerteventura with onthebeach.com from Gatwick (£1350 all Inc 1 week school holidays, family of 4 with waterpark, transfers etc.), so just keep an eye out. That was just as lockdown was easing.

The U.K. is a mess 🤷🏼‍♀️

MariaLuna · 15/10/2023 03:03

Just found a 12 night cruise Southampton -Miami for £349 . For another £149 I get free wifi , open bar and speciality dining . Will need to pay for flight back but reckon it's still a bargain.

This is bullshit.

decionsdecisions62 · 15/10/2023 03:44

That's why we have a campervan. Most cottages are a ridiculous price and it just feels like money down the drain. If I'm going to pay those kind of prices then there has to be sunshine and a pool.

User90q · 15/10/2023 03:52

Cornwall is ridiculous.

Wholeheartedly agree and I am done with trying to spend money on a UK holiday. Just found a 12 night cruise Southampton -Miami for £349 . For another £149 I get free wifi , open bar and speciality dining . Will need to pay for flight back but reckon it's still a bargain.

A twelve night cruise to Miami for £400 please do share where you can find this?

Graciebobcat · 15/10/2023 07:03

They will have to lower the prices or close in the end, people will go overseas.

Ellemeg82 · 15/10/2023 07:04

The prices are just crazy. I was looking at caravans in school summer hols at Haven in Devon or Cornwall and for 7 nights they were coming up at between 2-3k! And of course that doesn't include travel or food.
We went abroad all inclusive this summer for less than that!
I like UK holidays but the prices just mean I begrudge paying that when I can go abroad cheaper with pretty much guaranteed weather.

Graciebobcat · 15/10/2023 07:06

I know costs have gone up but at £2k for a caravan they deserve to go under. It's a complete piss take.

Highandlows · 15/10/2023 07:07

A bit of RIP OFF Britannia? Nothing new I am afraid. I decided this summer that never again. That along with the shitty weather did it for me. The only good thing is not having to go to the airport.

TenaciousTortoise · 15/10/2023 07:14

It’s a joke, we get absolutely mugged off for everything in this country and the quality is shite.

Ticket prices are the same. We go to a show every year, in 2022 the tickets were 220pp. Last year 290pp. This year 360pp.

Thats a 50% increase over two years and it’s utterly outrageous.

Sandpitnotmoshpit · 15/10/2023 07:19

Being trapped on a boat for 12 days is my idea of hell!

I agree about COVID - for two years the prices were astronomical because noone went abroad and they haven't dropped. We are still going on two UK breaks next year but a week in Norfolk is costing just less for accomodation than the total for a package holiday abroad (albeit the former is in the summer hols).

What annoys me is actually the crap service. Like charging you for breakfast in a hotel which is already really expensive, checkout at 10 in a holiday cottage and arrival at 4 - supposedly for cleaning but the place is not very clean. The standard of service in UK hospitality is generally poor. They are clearly struggling for staff right up to the top end very expensive places. I recently had terrible service in a v expensive hotel (we were just eating).

MintJulia · 15/10/2023 07:19

This half term. I've rented a 2 bed cottage on the Northumberland moors for £460 for a week. Two of us going although it sleeps four, so we won't be cramped and I think is reasonable value.

We'll cycle, see Hadrian's Wall, Dark Skies observatory, huge blustery beaches and pub suppers, visit Durham plus take DS into Newcastle city centre on a Friday night 🙂

All I need is NOT pouring rain for the whole week.

Graciebobcat · 15/10/2023 07:20

A lot of it is just profiteering.

gotomomo · 15/10/2023 07:21

@Thebelleofstmarys

That's a repositioning cruise, they are always cheaper but no window for that price - I looked at it too. I've opted for the canaries though, balcony and ai

camelfinger · 15/10/2023 07:26

Whenever these threads come up I get excited and start trying to find holidays abroad. Anything cheap has a 0600 flight out of Stansted and a basic room with no facilities, with food extra. I know there are places in the UK that are really expensive but at least you can get a whole house with separate bedrooms for that money (especially in Wales).

I’ve bought a tent in the sale. I’m going to
make use of it next year in the Lakes and National Parks. It’s ridiculous what hotels here charge (London is insane, although I tend to stay just outside central London).

We've done this. Mind you the campsites are blimmin expensive especially the naice ones in a National Park. One place wanted £53 per night over the summer hols!

We got a week for £300 in Norfolk that was lovely, walk to the beach and animals on the farm. Still felt quite expensive for a campsite. We had no electric and had to pay £1 per shower. Showers were good and hot though so I thought it fair to pay extra for them.

But.. it used to be £12 - £15 a night for that kind of place...

yumscrummy · 15/10/2023 07:36

It was a cruise that a previous poster mentioned and other posters couldn’t find. You don’t have to see the appeal. People like different holidays! I don’t fancy cruises either but do understand the appeal for people who do like those holidays.

Or genius!

Depending on the seas could be a nice way to get gently sozzled for a week!

Turefu · 14/10/2023 19:09

You might be surprised. It’s a thriving northern city , cheap and with good transport links. It’s worth trying.

And close to the Peak District

Spudlet · 15/10/2023 07:57

You can still get less expensive holiday cottages, but there are compromises. We had a week in the summer holidays for less than £500 and the cottage itself was nice, but it was in an ex-mining village that was quite run down in places and there wasn’t an awful lot to do there. However it was 45 minutes to drive right into a National Park with some great hiking, so we just did that. We weren’t really bothered about eating out as DS is very restrictive in what he’ll eat anyway and we were on a budget, so we just cooked. It was a nice holiday.

However, prices in the main spots are indeed a bit bonkers these days 🤨

HairyToity · 15/10/2023 07:58

My husband's health insurance is about 2k for a week abroad ( he lives with a chronic illness). We have found reasonably priced uk cottages, often booked last minute. It takes a lot of searching mind.

bakewellbride · 15/10/2023 08:01

It's ridiculous I agree. We have booked butlins for august 2024. 2 adults, 2 young kids. £1170 for 4 nights!!!!!! Just unbelievable.
