Room Service in UK Hotels

I've noticed recently that room service appears to be a dying tradition of staying in hotels.

Currently at a hotel and no room service at all... no emptying of bin, no making of bed, no changing of towels etc.

Is this becoming the norm?

Quite a few are servicing the room on a request basis rather than automatically doing it everyday. I assume it's because of staffing shortages.

I don’t know if I’m going to the wrong type of hotels but room service isn’t even a bloody option once at the hotel. It’s annoying

I'm in a hotel at the moment booked for two adults. We had one stick of coffee, one of decaf and one towel when we arrived. Bizarrely, we also had a travel cot in the room.

It's a large chain and not cheap. We're only here overnight so I'm not sure on the room service side, but I wouldn't be optimistic.

Allegedly there's room service in the one I'm in. I checked before booking as I'm run / walking a half marathon tomorrow.

I have now waited 2 HOURS and counting for my burger and chips.

I have chased 3 times and I am so angry.

Luckily I grabbed some crisps on the way from the station but that's all I've had

It’s really common. If you need supplies you ask at the front desk. Some hotels are good and have moved common things like towels and loo roll to a cabinet right there. Others they have to walk to housekeeping to get it for you.

it’s touted as a way to keep the staff germs out of your room during your stay. It’s really about staffing shortages and saving money. It works for me because of my particular medical issues, but I always just requested no housekeeping during my stay. Now though, at many hotels getting restocked supplies from the front desk is easier.

I just order Deliveroo or similar now and eat that in my room.

Cheeesus · 07/10/2023 21:19

Actual room service, food, yeah maybe, but coming into the room and tidying and cleaning and swapping towels I’ve had in all hotels recently.

jiinglebells · 07/10/2023 21:25

I've never known that in a UK hotel or one abroad, rooms have always been serviced every single day + full room services menus on offer.

LIZS · 07/10/2023 21:30

Noticed this post pandemic. You often have to request a clean, bed making, top up of toiletries, tea/coffee and fresh towels, otherwise may only be once per stay. Partly due to low staffing but probably as much cost saving.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/10/2023 22:18

So long as it's easy to get supplies from reception, tbh I'd just as soon people weren't coming into my room during my stay.

Kernackered · 07/10/2023 22:29

How much are you paying per night?

itsgettingweird · 08/10/2023 03:59

Yeah pretty normal nowadays.

Ds and I often stay 5/6 nights in a holiday inn a few times a year and we have to ask for towels and loo roll but they are always fab at it being there by the time we get back to the room!

CP is the one that annoys me they've stopped servicing. We stayed a week in an apartment this year and with it being a forest setting the room needed a good hoover a few days in. I'd be happy if they just provided a simple one in the room!

itsgettingweird · 08/10/2023 03:59

The towels one isn't new though. They stopped replacing so often and changing bedding after a few days many years ago due to climate change and washing less.

NotFastButFurious · 08/10/2023 17:36

Room service or housekeeping? Everywhere I’ve stayed has daily housekeeping although a couple of places have a “go green” option to hang on the door and skip it. Personally I don’t need the bin emptying daily and my toilet roll folding into a point!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 08/10/2023 17:43

We recently stayed in Copenhagen where if you declined having your room serviced, you got a voucher to spend at the bar. It covered a glass of wine for each of us (per day) which made for a better holiday than having my loo roll folded into a point.
