I have some leave to take and want to get away for some r&r. Just somewhere in the uk that I can get to by train, has some nice hotels and restaurants and bookshops/antique shop type places. Just 2 nights. Not spa type place.

any suggestions?

Norwich. 2 hours from Liverpool Street. Plenty to see and do there. Nice shops, the largest permanent covered market in the UK. Nice pubs, scenic riverside. Lovely old streets.

Norwich. Two hours by train, got two cathedrals, castle, antique/ junk shops , lovely restaurants and shops. Very walkable. Stay at the Assembly House or Maids Head if budget allows

Hotel Zanzibar
The Bank and Bistro Hotel
Porters restaurant in the Old town have an air b&b next door.. My friend stayed there and said it was really nice.

If you like jazz @Bruisername and you book on the right Wednesday, Liane Carroll will play for you while you dine at Porters.

Spoilt for choice!!

it looks like the Zanzibar has been turned into a holiday house unfortunately. The others look great though.

will also have a look at Norwich!

That's a shame about the Zanzibar. Had a great stay there in their Africa room.

I’m not on Facebook unfortunately!

Agree that Rye is lovely. The George in Rye is a great hotel.

I'm a great Eastbourne fan - but can't recommend anywhere to stay particularly. Best second-hand bookshop ever (Camilla's) and some nice indy shops. Pier, sea and Beachy Head nearby! And the Art Gallery (Towner) is holding the Turner Prize this month. According to the Guardian, this means there's an Art Bus running between Eastbourne and other arty places such as Charleson and Lewes https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2023/sep/21/my-cultural-day-out-on-the-sussex-art-shuttle. - which would show you some of the South Downs. So, if you're even vaguely interested in art that might be quite fun??

My cultural day out on the Sussex Art Shuttle

With next week’s Turner prize opening in Eastbourne, we try a hop-on, hop-off bus service that takes art lovers around the area’s cultural hotspots

Chichester is a lovely cathedral town. Lovely villages nearby would recommend a bus to Old Bosham. Good bus network and fast trains from London

MinnieMouse0 · 27/09/2023 00:38

Edinburgh is about 4.5 hours from London on the train, is that too far?

Otherwise, Lincoln is next on my list in the UK, looks lovely.

Bruisername · 27/09/2023 08:59

Thanks!! I will have a look at all suggestions!

Definitely Winchester. A beautiful city with a gorgeous riverside walk right in the heart of it.

Bruisername · 27/09/2023 09:22

Winchester is lovely but I have been a few times!

going off piste but any thoughts on Rotterdam?

OP posts:
CloudPop · 27/09/2023 12:56

Rotterdam is actually lovely, check it out on Google
Or what about Lille? 1hr 20 in the Eurostar. Really nice place for a weekend

EyesOnThePies · 27/09/2023 13:07

For Rye, Jeakes House. A fantastic boutique hotel

I was going to add to those saying Norwich. Lovely historic centre, market, the wonderful art nouveau Royal Arcade shops.

Peaceandquietfinally · 27/09/2023 13:12

I went to Broadstairs for the first time recently. It’s lovely.

Following with interest! I’m wondering if it’s mad to go from Cambridge to Falkirk for a day trip, with one tiny dog, staying away from home for a night is way outside my comfort zone.

OuiRagamuffin · 29/09/2023 21:01

Cambridge to Falkirk, is that a known walk? That sounds like an adventure (to me) but if I coukd organise that, actually go ahead with it, and enjoy it, then I'd feel less of a fantasist for believing I am brave enough to walk the camino

EllaMaeve · 29/09/2023 21:22

Den Hague ( as you were considering Rotterdam). Lots of museums, shopping, cafes and bars around a large square- and we went to a flea market.

Rotterdam is lovely too.

Toomiddleclassforwords · 29/09/2023 21:25

Winchester is nice and super easy on the train

Newcastle, including Ouseburn for live music (The Cluny), vintage and arts. The quayside has a Sunday market, The Baltic and The Sage.

Windsor & Eton
