Where to visit in Norfolk and Suffolk

I’ve never been to either county and am looking for recommendations of where to visit? Lovely scenery etc and especially where to find great food.
What are your favourite places?

In Suffolk, the obvious places are Southwold, Aldeburgh and Framlingham. And - further inland - Bury St Edmunds.

I love North Norfolk - gorgeous beaches, Blakeney to watch the seals, Cromer for a traditional seaside resort, beautiful pier and amazing crab / seafood restaurants, Holt is a nice market town with little shops to browse, birdwatching, Wells next the Sea for crabbing and a beach that seems to be neverending when the tide is out.

In Suffolk, Lavenham, Ickworth House, Bury St Edmunds, Southwold and Aldeburgh. In Norfolk, Wells-Next-the-Sea, Blakeney for the Seals and Holkham.

Woodbridge would be a good base for some lovely day trips and great food. The Unruly Pig is currently the 2nd best gastropub in the country, and nearby Orford is famous for the Pump Street Bakery, Pinneys Smokehouse and The Crown and Castle. Southwold and Walberswick, Dunwich, Aldeburgh, Snape and Thorpeness are all within easy reach of Woodbridge.

Lots of great replies - thank you all very much.

Norfolk Blakeney for seal trips, Wells next the sea, lots of nice steam trains, canoeing trips with the canoe man, and can hire boat and see Norfolk Broads. Food Wells crab House.

I thought Cromer was beyond awful, but the coast heading north of there got much nicer. I like Walberswick and Southwold. Maybe less obvious, Dedham Vale on the Essex-Suffolk borders — ‘Constable country’, an AONB and nice walking.

If you are a member of the National Trust there is Sheringham Park, Felbrigg Hall and Blickling to visit in Norfolk

You can't head north of Cromer unless you're on way to Norway, I suppose.

I don't like restaurant food but scenery... it sort of depends how you want to interact with it. Drive thru? Walk, cycle, paddleboard, boat ? It's so late in season that I'm unsure which boat excursions are still running, though. I'll assume the interest in meal time precludes cycling, paddling or long walks. Can you handle uneven ground walks?

We live on the Suffolk / Norfolk border. Cromer is really overrated. We’ve been a few times and wouldn’t go back again. Southwold is lovely. Aldeburgh is nice. Yarmouth is totally tacky and typical British seaside - if you go with an open mind and sense of humour it’s lovely, complete opposite to Southwold so good to visit both. Norwich is really nice for a day out, lots of nice shops and the Cathedral area is pretty. If you can book one get a boat from the various boat hire places along the broads and do that for a day.

Thanks again everyone.

Ok, heading out of Cromer along the coast in he direction of Sheringham and beyond.

Norwich for great food, particularly vegan stuff and also brilliant pubs for real ale.

Broads - do a day trip on a hired boat, or rent canoes/kayaks. Lots of beautiful wildlife.

North Norfolk (Brancaster etc) hugely expensive and overrated.

Cromer is a typical seaside small town and has great fish and chips.

Bewilderwood is great if you have young children.

lljkk · 16/09/2023 21:50

Orford (Suffolk) is a very pretty village, Orford Castle very impressive. Waterfront is nice. Was heaving today!!

lljkk · 17/09/2023 20:39

i dont' know what people really do there, but Snape Maltings is very popular.

BlueChampagne · 18/09/2023 13:16

Woodbridge also a good base for Sutton Hoo, replica saxon ship, and Tide Mill.
