We're thinking of going to Whitby for a weekend. We'd either stay in a B and B or rent a cottage. Does anyone have any recommendations? the cheaper the better!

We stayed here and it was absolutely gorgeous!

Whitby is one of my favourite places in the world and I would recommend it to anyone.

You MUST do a Dracula walk - it wouldn't be Whitby if you didn't

There are cheaper places to stay, but you may be a bit further out of town.

You could also think about staying in Robin Hoods Bay which is about ten minutes away from Whitby and also lovely.

You also must visit Cayton Bay for the view.

Right, that's your weekend sorted. You won't have time to do anything else after you've done everything I've suggested

Enjoy

I can reccomend a place about 10 minutes walk from whitby. It's called Anstis Cottage and is actually a modern town house. I'm no good at links but if you do a google it should show up.

this one, jenthejen?

Thanks all! I used to take all my childhood holidays in Whitby but haven't been since I was about 13 so am really quite excited. Have been doing some googling and the youth hostel looks quite nice too.

Yes Squonk, that's it. It was great, the only downside was that there was no enclosed garden.

I'm from near Whitby but live in London. My mum lives on coast road to Whitby. I go home for half term hols and my 3 kids age 1, 3 & 5 love:
naff day on the beach in Redcar with ice creams and fairground rides on front (take the little train from Saltburn to Redcar and back)
naff day on beach in Saltburn with miniature railway
day out in Whitby, stopping along way to take in great beach outside Lythe, then Whitby Abbey
Robin Hood's Bay, go to Chocolate Heaven
North Yorks Moors for picnics, Grosmont to Pickering steam train
day out in York for civilised bit of fun and National Railway Museum
walk in Stewarts Park (near Middlesbrough)
Staithes for great walk along promenade

I know the North East is grim, but we love it because it is wild and unlike anywhere else.

while we're on the subject

I loved Whitby when I used to go pre-kids but all I remember is walking up and down lots and lots of steps and steep cobbled streets

is my memory correct? it's would be a shite place to go with a disabled child wouldn't it?

katyamum · 08/03/2008 19:32

yes, lots of steps when you're going up towards the abbey. Although you could manage the rest of it. Fish and Chips in Magpie Cafe or better still, Trenchers, would be nice steps or no steps.

MaeBee · 12/03/2008 14:23

we want to book a cottage in whitby this summer too and were hoping for recommendations!
whitby is the business, its brilliant!

Clary · 20/03/2008 01:36

yay katyamum, first time I've ever heard anyone recommend Trenchers above the Magpie (which people go on and on about).

Trenchers is the bizneez for fish and chips and the service is totally excelltn and very fast!

We stayed in the youth hostel at half-term with 3 other families we know. It was brilliant. The DC ran wild and nobody seemed to mind. The Abbey is right next door and the DC thought it was fantastic.

We went to Runswick Bay which has a beautiful beach, and spent the day playing games, rock pooling and making a fire.

We'll go again next year. The DC keep asking when we will go to Whitby again.

We went last summer for a fortnight, stayed the first week at Saltwick Bay Holiday Park and the second in a private let cottage. Saltwick Bay was by far the better of the two, we had a newish static caravan right opposite the playpark so easy to keep an eye on DD. Very clean, not that expensive, we booked through Hoseasons but they now accept bookings directly. Would def recommend.
