Norfolk in November with a 92 year old

In November we will be spending a few days in North Norfolk with FIL as we are going to the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. We are trying to think what else we can do with him while we are there.

We have been to that area before but many of the things we did on previous visits would be ruled out because he can't walk very far. E.g. Sandringham would be tricky as I think he would find it too tiring. So basically we are looking at trips we can drive too and then minimal walking.

One idea I had was to go seal spotting if we can get close enough to a beach where the seals come up.

Does anyone have any other ideas for trips one could make with a rather elderly chap?

Seal spotting is a boat trip. Wrap up warm !! Not sure the boats run then, though.

I had to google where is Thursford.
Holkham Hall is your go-to. Most of the grounds are paved gentle access. Very pretty.
Walsingham light railway could be pleasant diversion.

Do they like bird watching, can they walk on rough ground ok?
Can sit in cafe & admire the scene at Wells.

The Norfolk Lights Express sounds terrific and we are staying not far from Sheringham. Unfortunately it only runs on Friday, Saturday Sunday and we will be there Monday to Thursday.

However I looked up Wroxham Miniature Worlds and love the sound of that. I think DH and I would enjoy that too. Might put it on the list.

Thanks

I know the seal spotting at Blakeney is a boat trip, which would probably not work for us. However, I had read that as it is pupping time then you can sometimes see them on beaches at Horsey Gap and Winterton on Sea. I thought they might be more accessible. Does that sound likely?

He has binoculars. I think crossing rough ground would be a no no.

The seals (including pups) are on view year-round at Horsey Gap/Cart Gap/Winterton area. But

  1. it's probably > 1 hour drive each way from your base
  2. the ground to walk over to go see the pups is very uneven. My 80yo dad (had a stroke 15 yrs ago) could not manage the deep sand, uneven ground , deep sand on steep slope, etc. Your relative may be ok with such uneven ground over a short distance?
  3. It's at least 500m walk each way from carpark to see the seals at Horsey gap. There is a carpark closer to beach at CartGap, but far fewer seals here, not usually pups.

The birdwatching areas at Salhouse would be closer to you & less uneven ground to cope with, to reach the hides.

The Christmas lights at Holt are very very pretty, but maybe not there until December.

If you head to Wroxham, Broads Tours do River Trips. Might be an idea

NORFOLK Lavender could be nice for afternoon tea/ lunch.
Not sure if its open all year round though.
What about the steam train from Sheringham to Holt, think you can get a return.

Cromer Pier do a Christmas show in the theatre but it might be a bit similar to Thursford.

Can you get a wheelchair so he doesn't miss out and you can all have more fun rather than crawling along at a snails pace. It took a while to persuade my dad but he was converted after one trip. He can still get out and walk when he wants or needs to.

We went on the North Norfolk railway steam train from sheringham to holt. It was a lovely day out. We had lunch in holt and then headed back.

When my GM visited we used to hire a wheel chair from the red Cross. There are also other places that hire out mobility scooters and some beaches have sand friendly wheelchairs with big inflatable wheels - whether they'll be available in November is another matter.
