Good places to visit, eat, drink.

Things to see and do.

Any hidden gems.

Don't mind a drive ( up to about 90 mins).

We have stayed near to Woodbridge and Beccles in the past so looking for ‘other’ ideas possibly.

Thanks so much.

Lavenham is lovely for a day or overnight

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/08/2023 00:00

The Pier, Harwich: best fish and chips

Enii · 24/08/2023 00:05

Both look Fab - just googled. I've not heard of Lavenham, what a place to visit and DH loves his history. Fish and chips suits me too. 😀Thank you!

Bury is interesting if you haven't been, lots of history. The brewery tour is fun and space to run around/playground in the Abbey Gardens
For an easy walk try Thetford forest, or there is Go Ape or Segways for the more adventurous.

Lavenham is picture perfect and The Swan is fabulous, glorious food and very friendly staff.

Sorry, me again 😁. Castle Hedingham is a great afternoon out.

Place-marking!

Kentwell hall is another day trip idea; they often have historic days with people dressed up and so on.

Depending on how far you want to drive and exactly where you're based, perhaps Flatford Mill/Dedham Vale (Constable country).

Or the little village of Clare.

Or Framlingham castle.

Or Aldeburgh and Snape, though if you've stayed near Woodbridge, you've probably done those already.

Even Cambridge or Ely could be a nice day trip from Bury itself.

Enii · 24/08/2023 08:01

These are great suggestions. Thank you.

We don't have DC’s with us, does anyone know of any very easy cycling?

Yes, we know Aldeburgh and Snape etc. Love Snape Maltings for a much, including at the time, a free outdoor concert.

We also stayed in Cambridge at the start of a trip a couple of years ago but do fancy Ely this time as we pass by on our journey to the cottage.

Is Folkestone worth a visit too?

Lots of great restaurants if only adults coming.... Of the top of my head: maison bleu, pea porridge and lark is a new restaurant which is getting great reviews. The restaurant at Wyken vineyards is very nice too.
Cycling there are routes in Thetford forest at high lodge which vary from sedate in trees to mountain biking routes. I. Think ickworth as mentioned above has a cycling route.
Bury itself nice for a wander, lots of old buildings in dependant shops and cathedral and Abbey gardens

grafittiartist · 24/08/2023 08:25

Wanted to mention Kentwell Hall too- look out for events.

PickledPurplePickle · 24/08/2023 08:29

Southwold - best fish and chips and a really cute location

If you like to try different beers, this is a cute little brewery with taproom and the burgers are really good too

The green trail at High Lodge is very easy cycling. The blue trail is a bit more challenging but still perfectly fine (few roots and bumps and a few banked turns) - our 7 year old whizzes around it.

West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village is pretty close by too and nice to wander around.

ImInACage · 24/08/2023 08:41

If you venture over to Ipswich, Christchurch Park and Mansion are well worth a visit, especially if you're into history.

Excited101 · 24/08/2023 08:42

There’s no point going to Melford Hall if Kentwell’s got an event on- they’re exceptional

SuffolkBargeWoman · 24/08/2023 08:45

Walk along the river Orwell and lunch at the Butt and Oyster pub, make sure you book in advance ans ask for the table in the window.

Hbh17 · 24/08/2023 08:51

I second Wyeken Vineyards.

Suffolk Food Hall in Ipswich to shop or for a meal.

Southwold, Aldeburgh, Framlingham all as mentioned.

In Bury itself, there's a nice little museum called Moyses Hall on Cornhill - also a Banksy (& similar) show at the moment.
If you like gin, just opposite there is the Adnam's shop and you can book a session to make your own gin, which is fab.

Enii · 24/08/2023 11:46

All sounds great. @PickledPurplePickle - Sole Bay is a favourite, especially the crab!
I think I can manage the cycling ( if a 7 year old can….or perhaps not! 😳) @Spudlet

I posted a few years ago about a Norfolk/Suffolk trip and was armed with so many great ideas, positive this time too. MN at its best.

You might want to review that if you want to eat in in Southwold. The fish and chips are a little overdone atm

@Hbh17 - Wyeken looks amazing. Thank you.

Any information please about:

  • ‘vintage’, second hand markets, sales also appreciated. Love a rummage😀
  • outdoor water/boats. We hired a kayak and rowed to a pub and back last time. Hilarious ( in fact the video clip is a classic🤣)

We arrived yesterday.
Holiday cottage is immaculate, so cute and SILENT, except for birdsong and the very occasional plane ( hear but not see).
Glorious sunny morning, long walk around the forest. A long breakfast in the garden and off to the brewery festival this afternoon ( first of two…thanks @PickledPurplePickle).
And relax!
