Best attractions for pre schoolers

I'm looking at creating a list of places in the UK we might like to visit over the next couple of years with our DD. She is currently 18m so looking at places for 2/3/4 year olds.
I thought I would ask people what the best attractions/days out they have had with kids of that age are?
So for example I have Eureka in Halifax on the list- we would then plan a stay in that area and do other things while there.
We are on the West Sussex/Surrey border so ideally looking for things that are different to what we might already have access too within an hour of us.
Hope that makes sense

I have:

  • Paultons park (just to far for a day for us)
  • Bewilderwood
-Alton towers (cbebbies world!)
  • world of Beatrix potter
  • eureka
  • national show caves in wales
  • Magna science centre
  • beamish museum
  • the Isle of Wight
  • a seal sanctuary (there are a couple around)
  • a large sandy beach that isn't heaving in nice weather! Possibly a big ask but it's almost all pebbles down here and any sand is overwhelmingly busy at the first sign of summer
  • Lilidorei at Alnwick gardens

To be honest, Eureka is alright, but not worth coming from Sussex! (I live 30 mins away, and have been about 50 times, so I may be jaded). Tag it to a holiday in the Yorkshire Dales though.

Legoland
Chester Zoo

It would be as part of a holiday in the area but this helps us kind of narrow down where to go if that makes sense.
Legoland is doable in a day from us just.
Will add Chester zoo- we do like a good zoo.

Absolutely not Magna for a preschooler, at least not until 4ish. It's big, dark, loud and echoey and there a bit with sparks whizzing across the ceiling. My DC were terrified of it!

The "galleries" are quite fun, albeit tired (unless they've been tarred up recentjy) but you have to walk through big/loud etc area that simulates a steelworks to get there.

I'd recommend
Seven Stories and the Life Museum in Newcastle u Tyne.
Obviously the South Ken museums
Bethnal Green Museum of childhood (recently refreshed and modernised)
The Bluebell Railway

These following are all local to me, and could be woven into a S/W Yorks holiday. I have been to them all many times and they are good days out:

Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley
The Butterfly House in N Anston
The Yorkshire Sculpture Park
(And yes, Eureka! since you'll be in the area)

Thank you for that feedback on Magna.
Bluebell railway is less than 30mins from us- haven't been on it yes but definitely will soon!
I have read about the stories place in Newcastle but had forgotten about it so thanks for the reminder

Most London stuff is reasonably easy in a day from here.

As you like a zoo I’d recommend
West Midland safari park
Yorkshire Wildlife park
for a Seal sanctuary go to Gweek ( cornwall) it’s excellent , there are also sandy beaches in Cornwall .
Oasis camel park Linstead , Suffolk

WRT what has already been recommended the Yorkshire sculpture park was a big let down for us .

cherryassam · 12/08/2023 14:02

Diggerland (Durham, Devon, Kent, Yorkshire)

Nickelodeon Land (Blackpool Pleasure Beach)

Kidzania London

Thomas Land (Drayton Manor)

CBeebies Land (Alton Towers)

National Railway Museum (York)

The Deep Aquarium (Hull)

Woburn Safari Park

Bewilderwood (Norfolk / Cheshire) (might wait till older though)

Greenwood Forest Park (North Wales)

Also - N Yorks - Forbidden Corner

Alnwick Castle is fab, save it for when she's old enough to be into Harry Potter, as many of the Quiditch scenes were filmed there, and you can have a broomstick lesson! And Northumberland is full of gorgeous, sweeping sandy beaches, and trips to the Farne Islands to see seals.
Lindisfarne is fun to drive to across the causeway, but you really need to be into birdwatching or early Christian history to spend a lot of time there.

Is the deep much better than the sealife centres?
Brighton sealife is easily doable in a day for us

I think the Deep is a much better visit - more to do, more species, better laid out, better value for money, activities for toddlers, talks designed for young children

Thank you. My sister is in Northumberland on holiday currently which is where the suggestion for Alnwick gardens came from. She said the beach they went to was amazing and hardly busy even in august

For Greenwood it’s just worth checking height requirements if there’s anything your DC would be really upset to not be able to do

Sundown adventure land in Retford! Nobody ever seems to know about it. It's a theme park just for small kids. My son used to love it and the parks they have are very good too, huge play gyms as well. It's all train rides and suitable for toddlers, I took my son when he was 5 and he loved it still. They have a western/cowboys area that was his favourite.
