London Underground

Hi. DD and I are going to London tomorrow for Wicked and staying overnight. What’s the best way to pay for the underground? Do we pay contactless for every trip or is it best to get a travel card? (We normally travel from mum’s which is nearer and we get a travel card with our ticket, but this time we’re going from Chester!)

How old is dd? What station will you be coming into and do you have two contactless cards?

How old is your dd?

Yes just use your contactless cards. You need one each. The price you pay is capped daily so after a certain amount you won’t be charged anymore. Contactless/Oyster is always the cheapest price.
Make sure you beep in and out on the tube but if you use a bus you only need to beep when you get on, not off.

Oh sorry I didn’t realise you were with your daughter.
Yes her age will make a difference.

In a nutshell,

If she is aged under 11 - you use a contactless debit card, use the family gates and she goes through for free

If she is aged over 11 AND you have a Friends & Family railcard you can buy a discounted travelcard for you both when you arrive in London.

If you don't have a railcard you can either buy her a Visitors oystercard and have the Young Visitor discount put on when you arrive at Euston or buy a day travelcard (more expensive)

If you have a railcard, best to buy a travel card as the railcard discount can be applied. If not, contactless costs the same as a travel card so that’s easier

For an adult yes, for an 11-15 year old a travelcard is slightly cheaper than contactless

Thanks all. She’s 21 so 2 adults

Make sure you use the same card every time so that the price cap works.

Needmorelego · 07/08/2023 15:46

If she is an adult then you just need to use contactless cards. But one card each. You can’t use the same card for both of you.

Incidentally I can highly recommend an Italian restaurant called Il Posto which is right next door to Wicked.
