Day out in Bury St Edmunds?

Thinking of taking my bf for a day out in Bury St Edmunds. Any recommendations of things to do, places to eat and drink etc? We won't be driving, so things will need to be accessible from the main centre, but we're happy to walk, take public transport or a taxi if needed.

If you like beer, The Greene King brewery tours are fab.

Orangeradiorabbit · 22/07/2023 23:50

@cherryassam that sounds lovely. I'm going to look it up!

Abbey gardens is beautiful to walk around, plenty of benches and squirrels!!
Theres ruins and a aviary aswell. This is in the centre just across the road from the shops

Have a look to see what’s on at the Theatre Royal, and have the Willy Wonka afternoon tea at Queen’s.

@Fivemoreminutes1 @princessrapunzel thank you for these suggestions, both sound wonderful. I'm going to check them out!

Find a ghost tour of you’re there in the evening - i seem to remember it bills itself as the most haunted town in England.

Orangeradiorabbit · 23/07/2023 19:08

@RubaiyatOfAnyone oh wow. I didn't know that. A ghost tour sounds like a lot of fun. I will look one up.

Check out Moyses Hall Museum and the Arc to see if there's anything on (Moyses Hall has the Mutiny in Colour exhibition at the moment which looks interesting). Abbey Gate cinema is nice too. Bury has lots of markets and events on, have a look at the 'We Love Bury St Edmunds' facebook group for the date you're visiting plus exploreburystedmunds.com

Orangeradiorabbit · 24/07/2023 09:29

@ProfYaffle thank you for all these tips! I'll take a look at the ideas you mentioned. The exhibition sounds really interesting and the bf loves a market.

If you're a historical fiction fan, read The House at Old Vine by Norah Lofts (or the rest of the trilogy). She lived in BSE and based much of her fiction on the town. And they are a great read

Love those books so much.

Yes, and it was great visiting BSL, if you haven't already gone I'd recommend it.

Orangeradiorabbit · 26/07/2023 13:46

@Sausagenbacon and @TheCountessofFitzdotterel thank you for the recommendation, I will add the book to my reading list, it sounds fascinating! I enjoy historical fiction.

Enjoy!
The House trilogy - the town house, the house at Old vine, and the house at sunset, are a great accompaniment to visiting bse

Maison Bleue is excellent. And I think Pea Porridge has a Michelin star now. But both these are places you'd benefit having dinner in (lunch is still good, but they're dinner places really) so depends how long into the evening you're staying.

Bury is lovely, even just to wander around. Cathedral is pretty. St Mary's has the second longest church aisle in the country, and is where I got married, as did Michelle Keegan, it's lovely and just down from the cathedral.

Abbey Gardens are nice for a half hour sit down too.

Lots of nice places already mentioned but you could also try Lottie’s Waffles or the Angel Hotel for a cocktail or bite to eat. X
