Kent days out for kids

We are holidaying near Canterbury for a week this summer. Can anyone recommend any more quiet Sandy beaches or fun days out for kids. We plan to go to Howletts which is very nearby.

Leeds Castle is great day out. Loads to do so plan to spend the whole day there.

Leysdown and Minnis Bay beaches shouldn’t be too busy. Minnis Bay is close to Quex Adventure Farm Park which has quite a few things to entertain the kids. There’s also Quex Adventure golf.

Margate is worth a trip for the Hornby visitor centre and the fairground/amusements.

How old are your dc and how far would you consider travelling for a day out?

Derbybound2022 · 19/07/2023 21:55

Thank you. Didn't know of these. My children are 4 and 6 and we would travel up to an hour from Canterbury. We want to go to camber one day.

Dover castle - a really nice day out.
Romney hythe and dymchurch railway, you can stop at dymchurch (has a little fairground and stony beach) or go all the way to Dungeness (not much there, stony beach hut one that the kids love)
Herne bay - my kids always love this for a seafront day out, crabbing, pier rides, walk along the beach and arcades.
Wildwood - animal conservation park
Wingham wildlife park
Howletts zoo
Walmer castle - small castle but the grounds are nice. Deal is a short ride down the road from here, it has a nice beach front walk that the kids can scoot along.

Minnis Bay is very tidal. St Mildred's (westgate) is also good but has same issue so check tide times. Camber can get very busy on sunny days. There is a small funfair at Dymchurch (with tidal beach) and Romney, Hythe Dymchurch railway. Folkestone (Harbour arm and lower leas Country park) also good.

As well as Howletts, Wingham wildlife park and wildwood are close to Canterbury (although main road between Canterbury and wildwood shut all summer hols so check routes) or port Lympne Howlett (better in my opnion) sister park is just outside Folkestone

Ramsgate has a nice sandy beach and there is plenty more for the kids. Folkestone is also a winner. Deal and Walmer and Kingsdown as lovely and beautiful places they are, especially in the summer but be warned these are stoney beaches, the arcade is very small in Deal, the walking along the prom might be also be a bit much for little legs.

Dymchurch has lovely sandy beaches, shallow water when tides go out, and a small fairground for the little ones. A few amusements.

Mine loved the rock pools at Botany Bay, and hever castle.

Thank you so much. Any nice food places for recommendation would help too! We loved staying in camber last year but there weren't any nice places to eat

A walk in Blean Woods if they are interested in wildlife.
Look out for Morelli's Gelatos (there's an ice cream parlour in Broadstairs)
Dover Castle
Lullingstone Roman Villa
