Surrey - with teens

We are headed to Surrey this week with DS 16 & DD 14. We are also going to London for 2 days and have planned that, but wondering if anyone has good suggestions for things to do with the teens around Surrey or within about an hour or so. We will have access to a car. Based in Farnham and have a family meet on the Sat/Sun.

Obviously family have made some suggestions but just keen to find out more.

Teens not really into theme parks DS likes sports (rugby football) DD more art & shopping. They are pretty undemanding but they’ll want to Instagram their trip no doubt!!
😊

The sculpture park in Farnham is fab.
A tour of twickenham rugby ground followed by lunch on river at Richmond for the insta..?

Glowlamp · 10/07/2023 10:59

Ooh I like both of these and could feed my Ted Lasso addiction!
Didn’t know about sculpture park at all, off to google.
We are Scottish and not sure if Twickenham will be a shout or not! ;)
I’ve always fancied going to Hampton court too, these are fab.

Loads and loads of things. DH and I were just saying the other day, why is it not a more famous holiday destination.

You can hire kayaks or paddleboards and navigate the Wey river.
Thorpe Park or Chessington World of Adventures
Go Ape at Alice Holt or Chessington
Bird world if they like birds

If they like hiking, climb Box Hill or Leith Hill (Leith has a tower on top you can climb too) or walk around the stunning Devil's punchbowl. If they are superfit, hire or take bikes and do the bike challenge of cycling up Box Hill which is Olympic training territory for cyclists.

If they like wild swimming, go out to Frensham Ponds, a fresh water lake with natural sandy beach, loos, showers, cafe and striking weird heathland all around it. There are outdoor lidos at Guildford and Hampton Court, a skating rink and climbing wall at Guildford Spectrum.

Surrey is stunningly beautiful. Loads of woodland for cycling and hiking trails or find a local riding school and book a trek.

Check theatres in Woking, Kingston, Epsom and Guildford for plays, comedians and gigs.

Hampton Court maze and palace are fun if they are interested in history. You can get a boat from Kingston. Loads of other stately homes including Painshill in Cobham which has beautiful grounds with ruined follies and glittering grottos. If they like plants (weirdly my teens did) RHS Wisley is a really beautiful place for a picnic. It has a massive tropical greenhouse with waterfall and jungle and desert plants, loads of lakes with some baby moorhens right now.

As PP has said the sculpture parks are good. There are at least two. You can spend hours in there.

I live in central farnham OP so I'd suggest below:

Frensham ponds.
Tilford river (with a fab pub on the green, you can watch the cricket on)
Devils punchbowl if you like a hike. Stunning views.
Lots and lots of lovely pubs and restaurants.
Farnham castle.
Waverley abbey walk.
Farnham castle.
Easy access to M3 / M25 so Thorpe park etc.
chessington and Lego land aren't far.
Visit Surrey hills.
For seasons hotel in dogmersfield is lovely for afternoon tea.
Lots of independent little shops.
Pottery painting cafe (book though it gets busy)

I love living in Farnham it's quite quirky.
Train station is in the town.
Go to the mulberry pub if you like a good burger.
Heavens kitchen for amazing tomahawk steak.

CrumbleTumbleHouseOfCards · 10/07/2023 12:25

There's also tennis courts in the town centre which you can walk into. Take a picnic and do some tennis.

Farnham rugby club always have events on, have a look on their website.

You can go to David Lloyd and have a spa day while DC can play some sports. They have an outdoor heated pool etc.

Farnham park has a golf club at the top and cafe. You can walk around the whole park but it's a big park so if you want to gold head to the north. Drive up castle street and turn left into the carpark, you can watch / play golf and get a sarnie in the cafe.

Frensham Pond is closed to bathers due to algae at the moment but you can swim at The Quay in Mytchett. We love walking round Frensham Little Pond.

Mine also like Churt Sculpture Park, Waverley Abbey, The Devil's Punchbowl, Go-karting at Farnborough, Guildford Lido, Wisley.

Favourite Farnham restaurants are Yiayias at the Fox (Greek) and Massimo (Italian in the town centre).

swishswashswoosh · 10/07/2023 20:21

If you like Ted lasso then the streets you want to walk up are Paved court and Golden Court from the high street to Richmond green. The pub is on the corner although I would guess they would have used a studio to film in rather than the actual pub.

Glowlamp · 10/07/2023 22:38

Thank you everyone for all of these brilliant suggestions. Really looking forward to exploring the area. Sounds like there is going to be loads to keep us busy!
off to Google it all and add to my list.

If your DD likes art then Watts Gallery near Guildford is a must. Amazing cakes in the cafe and a beautiful shop full of liberty goodies make for a very pleasant afternoon!

Troubleroundthecorner · 10/07/2023 22:50

And Surrey Sports Park has lots of stuff such as bouldering/climbing/swimming but also the training ground for Harlequins rugby if your DS wants to watch them train. And Farnham itself if beautiful and lovely for shopping. You’ll have a great time!

Oakdog · 10/07/2023 23:13

If you've watched Ghosts, see if there is an open day at West Horsley Place, where it's filmed.

Glowlamp · 10/07/2023 23:16

Googling for Quins training sessions! Great idea.

If you've watched Ghosts, see if there is an open day at West Horsley Place, where it's filmed.

Or you can just go up and park at the opera house under the guise of wanting to find out about tickets and then just happen to take the two minute detour on foot to the Ghosts house. Inside isn't always open but you can take pics of the outside.

Head south to the coast.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and the Mary Rose is a good day out, combined with Gunwharf Quays outlet shopping.

New Forest is beautiful for walks or cycling.

Windsor

Winchester

EversoDetermined · 11/07/2023 07:00

Yes, you can use Park and Ride for day out in Portsmouth which makes it nice and easy. You could even hop on a hovercraft to the Isle of Wight.

CrumbleTumbleHouseOfCards · 11/07/2023 07:44

Also go ape / Alice holt nearby!
