Can I visit the Cotswolds in just one day?

I live within 2 hours of the Cotswolds and have realised I’ve never really spent much time there. All the lovely images on Instagram are making me think I’d like to go there for a day but which places are best for a quick visit or drive through? I’d have teenage dd with me, she is autistic and doesn’t really do the typical mother/daughter things so afternoon teas are out. We’ve been to the Cotswold Wildlife Park which was nice but I fancy visiting some other villages. Does anyone have some suggestions? Thanks.

First if all - what do you like doing? Walking - through village or countryside? Do you like rivers to walk/sit next to? Do you like shopping in crafty places? Does your teen struggle with busy places? More info needed if poss before making suggestions😄

CMOTDibbler · 15/06/2023 12:15

Theres a lot of the Cotswolds, so there will be places to suit - what sort of things would your dd like?

Bourton on the water is a lovely village with the river running through it, a small motor museum (not bn in a while, I assume it’s still there!) it does get busy though. Stow on the wold is also lovely. You could definitely visit a few villages in a day.

Was also going to suggest Bourton. Chipping Norton is nice too.

Bourton on the Water and Burford are my favourite places to go.

Thethruththewholetruth · 15/06/2023 12:43

If you want a quiet walk around away from crowds then the slaughters is nice. Tourist traps are bourton on the water, stow, burgers and Moreton. All beautiful but busy. The Cotswolds is huge.

JeminaPudd · 15/06/2023 12:49

Bourton on the water is hell on earth on any summer day.

Bluebells1970 · 15/06/2023 12:55

Broadway is lovely, though it can get really busy. Stow is quite nice too.

We avoid Bourton like the plague, it's just too busy.

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/06/2023 13:02

The southern edge of the Cotswolds is on the outskirts of Bath (I can see the first big hill from my house) and to Chipping Camden. It's a big place!

CrepuscularCritter · 15/06/2023 13:38

Maybe Broadway and the folly Broadway Tower? That would give you a mix of countryside and town. Stow on the Wold could also work, although parking in both Stow and Broadway is a bit of a challenge. Which side of the Cotswolds is nearest to you?

Mydoghealsmyheart · 15/06/2023 14:05

Gosh! Thanks for so many replies. I’m a very isolated carer with no friends as I’m so busy with my disabled children. My dd likes a little walk and seeing different places, loves calming scenery and animals. I’ve got some mobility issues so can’t walk too far but the idea of driving through some lovely villages and countryside and stopping for a nice lunch is very tempting. We have a hard life so it would be good to have something to plan and look forward to.
We would be to the west of the Cotswolds.

I'd have a drive to Broadway, then up Fish Hill to the tower for amazing views (depending on time the lavender fields may be out and though they charge to go into the ones at Snowshill I think, there is a farm shop which still lets you stop and still smell them. Then over the top road to Moreton for lunch which takes you through my favourite hidden gem village of Bourton on the hill which is so Cotswolds.
There is an arboretum at Moreton and I think they have birds of prey there. Come back down Fish Hill and go to the pub at Bretforton for a drink outside (its NT and very pretty as is the village)

SummerInSun · 15/06/2023 14:17

I'd say northish Cotswolds. Very easy walk from Upper to Lower Slaughter and back. Bourbon on the Water if you are there off peak or can get there early in the morning, but don't even think about it for a sunny Saturday afternoon in July. Stow on the Wold. Chipping Camden. A bit further north Broadway is my absolute favourite.

You can absolutely have a great day trip - we used to do it from London quite frequently. You can have an early dinner in a pub from, say, 6-7:30pm and be home at a civilised hour.

Oooh - good tips! Snowshill Manor (National Trust) has a lovely small cafe garden for morning or afternoon tea too.

This. Stow, Chipping Camden, Bibury and Bourton would be my last choices, due to the crowds . Lots of pretty villages around Cirencester or towards Oxford.

Some good ideas here too.

If your DD is a Harry Potter fan, they filmed at Lacock abbey and Gloucester Cathedral. Castle Combe is very pretty.
Bibury is lovely but is heaving with tourists, best to go early

MathiasBroucek · 15/06/2023 14:28

Have you asked Chat GPT? Sounds crazy but one of my colleagues used it to design a travel itinerary for him. Obviously, the output will depend on the info you give it (where you're driving from, what sort of stuff you like to do, tolerance of crowds etc.)

Ladybirdlashes · 15/06/2023 14:30

Bibury is beautiful and you could visit the trout farm to feed the fish too - that’s one of our favourite days out. The trout farm has a car park and if you get there for opening it’s never very busy, you can then walk through the farm to get to the village and that’s a gorgeous walk with the river running through.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 15/06/2023 14:49

If you like animals, go to the rare breeds farm at Guiting Power, lots of pretty villages around there, too.

Crikeyalmighty · 15/06/2023 14:54

As we live in Bath it's an easy one for us but every time we set off on a sunny Saturday or Sunday it becomes a nightmare so we often end up at Stroud market on a Saturday (which is fab)

gogohmm · 15/06/2023 15:15

It's a large area stretching down to bath in the south. If you mean visit a quaint village and take a short walk yes of course you can visit for the day, i recommend bourton on the water. If you want to see more you need more time obviously

gogohmm · 15/06/2023 15:18

I wouldn't go though until at least mid September, it's crazy busy. We're normally on the motorbike so don't have parking issues but for cars you simply can't park, get caught up in jams even on weekdays (coach trips)

It is amazing for stuff like that!

Mydoghealsmyheart · 15/06/2023 16:37

Oh thanks everyone, I’m so grateful for the suggestions. I would probably try to go on a weekday so it might be easier for parking and not too overwhelming for dd. Any good places for lunch or early dinner that people can recommend please? Thank you.
