Overnight stopping point when driving between Edinburgh and Newquay?

Hi,

We’re planning to drive to Newquay from Edinburgh with two young kids and a dog. Does anyone have suggestions for a good, family and pet friendly place to stop for an afternoon and overnight stay?

Thinking to get 4-5 hours driving done (with service station stops) in the morning then go somewhere fun for the rest of the day and night, then drive the rest the next morning.

All advice welcome, thank you!

Worcester or Cheltenham. Or slight detour to Great Malvern if you want a bit of a walk in the afternoon. Nice hotels, nice market towns to look around, reasonable food options, not too far off the motorway that your will get stuck in traffic (which is why I am not suggesting Liverpool or Birmingham).

Oh thanks @Saschka I wouldn’t even have thought of those! Shall investigate Great Malvern now…

There's a website that gives good options for midway points with family friendly options etc might be worth worth a gander .. can't recall off top of head what it's called. But do second rhe getting past Birmingham if u can so Worcester sounds about right.

@Toohardtofindaproperusername That website sounds exactly what I need! I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and that part of England is very unfamiliar to me.

Oooh Hilton Pukrup Hall in Tewksbury looks good. Dog friendly and space to run around. Would that work, location wise?

Whatshalfway.com

But it allowa you to play with the map. Halfway for you edms up being Stafford..Cannock.. north pf Birmingham. Thats my original neck of the woods and whatever you do don't stop north pf brum. The traffic in the mornings is a nightmare. Get closer to Worcester. There is Worcester woods or similar from looking,at map .. but you can also just look at the various options for family stop overs.
Cornwall is fantastic and close to my current neck of rhe woods. Enjoy it. West Cornwall great, North is more wild beaches and south is calmer more shallow child friendly.

Worcester woods Country Park... Country aork, nature reserve, play area, cafe, picnic area and walking trails

@Toohardtofindaproperusername Invaluable advice, thanks! I’d have stuck a pin in a map and suffered traffic nightmares. Probably better to do a longer leg the first day anyway.

Do a longer leg on the first day. The last bit of the drive into Cornwall, if you’re going at holiday time, is busy

You definitely want to be south of Birmingham at least. Going from Glasgow to St Agnes we stopped in Bristol. It was a long drive, but gave a decent drive the next day.

momentarybliss · 23/05/2023 21:16

Worcester woods really isn't the most exciting place in the world. Much better carrying on to the Malvern hills if you want to stop in Worcestershire and see the countryside. If you want a town to stop in I would go that bit further to Bristol as there is much more going on there.

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 23/05/2023 21:17

This 🖕. And have a lovely holiday

yoga4meinthemorning · 23/05/2023 21:23

Warwick castle

Drayton Manor Park

Oxford/Blenheim

Birmingham for city stuff

GrossToe · 23/05/2023 21:25

Thanks everyone! I hate long drives (never mind the small children and dog) so the thought of having a decent stop is really helpful. Not too bothered about a town for the children and dog reasons, but somewhere with space to roam will be nice.

A bit further south that anything suggested so far but the Forest of Dean is lovely.

Coronationstation · 25/05/2023 10:41

If your 4-5 hours of driving includes the service station stops then that'll only get you to around manchester / cheshire area. Tatton park or Dunham park are lovely but when I lived in that area we used to stop overnight between there and Cornwall!!

Belindabelle · 25/05/2023 16:55

Driven to Cornwall from Stirling many times. We leave early morning, always stop at Tebay and keep going right down at least south of Birmingham.

Last time we stopped at Barnstable North Devon and took the coast road down to Cornwall. Was quicker than going the usual way via Exeter.

If you are arriving in Cornwall on a change over day (Fri/Sat) the traffic is unreal. It can take hours to get anywhere so be prepared for that.

redgreenbluepurple · 25/05/2023 17:12

I live in Malvern so it's lovely to see it recommended!

A walk on the hills then dinner at the Brewers Arms in West Malvern as you come off the hills would be my suggestion.

Puckrup Hall is basically a golf course and when we went there for a family event we weren't allowed to walk around the grounds, but that was a few years back now so could have changed.

If you didn't want to come too far off the motorway the as PP have said Worcester is nice but I'd avoid Worcester Woods! Stay in the town and you can walk up the river.

GrossToe · 25/05/2023 22:39

@redgreenbluepurple ah this has worried me, I thought Puckrup Hall was going to be the green space we needed….

Seriously, Birmingham to Newquay can take your 10 hours if going in the Summer. I'd get as many miles under your belt the first day as you can and be setting off from Somerset on the 2nd day.
