I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT PARKING IN AMBLESIDE

Anyone know it well? I need a car park near the Lucky Dragon. I can see a couple on the map. But no way of knowing if you can pay on an app or have to go out every morning at 8am for a ticket. Also whether they have height barriers? I have a tall van

I know it's a very long shot but just thought someone might live there!

Miller Bridge car park is a long stay one, there isn't a height restriction but it is only open until about 8/9 at night, so I don't know if they allow overnight parking, you can pay by phone.
Rydal Road is also long stay, you can get a 3 day ticket. Again, no height restriction but check about overnight parking, although I think you can!

TheCumbrian · 21/05/2023 18:30

There aren't any height restrictions on any of the council run car parks in Ambleside.

They can all be paid for via PayByPhone.

Lake Road, Rydal Road and Low Fold car parks all offer long stay/multiple day parking tickets e.g 6-12 hours, 3 days and 7 days.

TheCumbrian · 21/05/2023 18:32

By the way Ambleside is tiny. If you don't have mobility issues it doesn't really matter where you park, it's all walkable.

Oh thanks so much! Love mumsnet Smile

Okay I looked it up. So it says you can get a pass for £38 or you can pay £1 a day before 9. Why would you pay £38 rather than £1 each day? If we can pay on the app, can't we just pay £1 each day? Can't see if a day covers a night too?

You'll be best with either lake road car park or Rydal road car park as both you can pay for multiple days.

Are you staying near the lucky dragon? There is on street parking along the road Infront and behind. Most holiday homes have a parking permit for on street parking.

Radi0Stockport · 21/05/2023 19:26

Yes! Near the lucky dragon. But it's a big van

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 21/05/2023 19:33

It is quite a busy road, but you might get lucky and get a space 😁

Radi0Stockport · 21/05/2023 19:35

There is a parking space at the property but won't fit the van. So no permit

Ooh that's a good deal. And our traffic wardens only work until 6pm 😂😂

TheCumbrian · 21/05/2023 20:06

I don't think the £1 all day parking is designed with the intention that you pay your £1 for the day and then you can come and go as you please - it's aim is to provide affordable parking for people who work in Ambleside and need to park up in time for the working day to start and leave their vehicle for the whole day.

the 3 - 7 day passes basically mean you can park up whenever you like but go out for trips etc with the vehicle as well.

It's an old south Lakeland district council thing (they ceased to exist on the 1st April) to provide affordable parking in hotspot areas for local people to park for work.

the vast majority of people using the council owned car parks in Ambleside are day trippers who aren't there before 9am to claim the early bird tariff. People staying for longer tend to have on street/ off street parking included with their accommodation.

Okay. We won't be moving it for seven days. It's just going to sit there

Do you think the £1 will be okay over night?

They don't charge between 8am - 8pm (except for Miller Bridge which is chargeable 8am - 9pm) so as long as you have paid your £1 before 8am you are fine.

TheCumbrian · 21/05/2023 21:10

Sorry - wrong way round. They don't charge between 8pm and 8am except for Miller ground where they don't charge between 9pm and 8am.

TheCumbrian · 21/05/2023 21:10

Miller Bridge ... not Miller ground

Radi0Stockport · 21/05/2023 21:17

Brilliant thanks so much!

I'm astounded that you can park for £1 all day in Ambleside!

Its the same in a few of the car parks in Kendal and in the Broad Street Car park in Windermere. It came about IRRC when they stopped the free parking on New Road in Kendal and had to offer an affordable alternative for people driving into Kendal for work. The same scheme was replicated to other SLDC carparks in other hotspots in South Lakeland.

Whether it remains now that SLDC is defunct and the new council Westmorland and Furness makes the rules remains to be seen.

It works on the basis that most tourists who staying more than 1 day:

A) don't need to use the car parks as they will already have parking,

B) will want to take their car out during the day to explore the lakes losing their entitlement to the £1 parking when they leave

C) Won't want to remember to pay the parking every morning.

Its a great scheme for people like the OP though when it falls in their favour.

Does the £2 bus fare also apply up there. My sister used to live in Grasmere and the bus fare was eye watering!
