City mini break

We live in London. We are looking for a short (two night, three max) mini break with just me and my just turned 18 daughter to celebrate her A levels. We went to Bath this past summer and loved it. I will drive, and would like to limit it to about three hours. We want a city that's walk aroundable. Thinking Cambridge, but any other suggestions? Also considering Lille for a non drive trip.

If you liked Bath, I think you’ll like York - lots of history, interesting unique shops and tea rooms, visually very pretty….

FisherThem · 29/04/2023 07:06

Winchester?

JuneShitfield · 29/04/2023 07:11

Brighton maybe. Seasidey, and fun for a teenager especially around the Lanes.

If you don’t mind a train or flying — Glasgow, Manchester, Amsterdam or Berlin.

If you can afford to stay in the centre of Cambridge I would recommend it wholeheartedly. The university has preserved the old buildings, some truly ancient to a remarkable degree. I guess its been an unusual coincidence of their wealth and power but it has resulted in a gorgeous and unique environment.
At night the atmosphere is amazing as many buildings are lit up.
And the Fitzwilliam museum is terrific. And the ice cream from the street carts superb. Also its nice to go out at night in a town centre that isn't riotous. Busy , a bit noisy and certainly a lot of young people but it was refreshing in that they weren't all drunk!
Sorry I am showing my age.

Oh just thought of a couple more — Bruges is gorgeous and might hit the spot if you liked Bath. Ditto Rotterdam.

Norwich and and Norfolk

Thanks everyone.
Winchester is too near - we could go for the day. Been to Bruge (fab) and Amsterdam (way too crowded) last summer. My daughter hates Brighton - went for an art trip a few years ago and really took against it for some reason!
Not flying.
I've been to York - bit of a trek though, would like to keep it within two to three hours.
Cambridge still looks like a contender, though she might want something a bit different from England which is why I'm considering Lille.

Brussels - I loved all the Art Nouveau buildings, markets, great food. Also quick and easy to get to on Eurostar, though check that your passports are valid under post-Brexit rules!

DustyLee123 · 30/04/2023 08:45

Liverpool. So much to do.

ShinyShinyShinyBootsOfLeather · 30/04/2023 08:46

I love Cambridge too. I used to spend a lot of time there as a friend lived there and I loved it.

mondaytosunday · 30/04/2023 08:57

Now Liverpool I never thought of!
Been to Brussels a few times - agree lovely city.
We have checked passports! Found out my son (not coming with) expires May 2024, which would be fine for now if he was but plan on US for Christmas so he will renew this year as there will be delays.

Liverpool is the best city break spot, and I say that as someone who has done most of the major cities in the country. Absolutely brilliant for all ages. I bet your daughter would love it!

NewtScamandersNiffler · 30/04/2023 09:15

I’d vote for Lille. Beautiful city centre, good shopping and food. Then museums for a day at Roubaix.

Easy day trip for us via St. Pancras and if your daughter is interested in art there are lots of stationery and art shops to browse.

Lincoln is lovely. Lots of lovely shops, bars, tea rooms and restaurants. The cathedral and steep hill are gorgeous to amble around. And there is a waterfront bit too

RampantIvy · 30/04/2023 09:19

Is Lincoln doable?
It has history and shopping and a lovely area by the marina that has bars and places to eat.

We did a short break there just after DD's A levels and loved it.

Pearfacebananapoop · 30/04/2023 09:49

Cheltenham is lovely, similar vibe to Bath good shops and nightlife.

Liverpool - as others have said it's just good fun! The theatre is also really good and half the price of a London shows so if there is something there you want to see time it around that.
