Where to go for 3-4 days?

Situation is this;

DH is repainting and recarpeting the house in a few months. He has suggested that we (DC13 and 11) and the Dcats all vacate so he can get on with skirting boards and varnishing and the like. Dcats will go to the cattery. I suggested that I take the DCs to Paris or The Channel Islands. However DH is quite 'But i want to go to those places TOOO'. he has suggested that we go somewhere where he will not have FOMO considering he is lumped with the horrid task of painting.

This is all in good fun but I think it is fair enough that we NOT go to places he wants to go to when he can come too.

So where should we go? There are loads of things that DH will not feel FOMO about (Haven caravan holidays or Centreparcs for example) but I don't want it to be too spendy.

I'd love some ideas for places that are fun! We have had some wonderful city breaks in Bath; Oxford; Salisbury and of course London before. Suggestions most welcome!!

Edinburgh

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/04/2023 18:52

Glasgow. Much more to do than Edinburgh, for kids, and you can visit Edinburgh for a day by train.

Whichnumbers · 20/04/2023 18:53

what Do your teens really like doing?

SpringLobelia · 20/04/2023 18:56

aaah Scotland! Great call!!

Older DC has autism and learning issues and likes a tiny little pootle about then a sit and chill somewhere with wifi and hot chocolate (works for me as usually such places have wine). He cannot cope with anything too active or noisy.

Younger DC is a total relaxed little delight and is happy to go along with whatever although he does like a museum or a castle. Which is where the pootle tends to come in.

Edinburgh is not cheap in the summer it's also pretty busy!

You might be better with Stirling also a lovely castle, can walk to a lot of places and if you have a car your not too far from the Kelpies, Falkirk wheel etc or a day in Edinburgh if you fancy it

I am really loving the Scotland ideas. I have never been and always been on the bucket list. We have family in Northumberland so I could easily spend a day or two there and then go on up. [wonders to self.. if we are away for a week will DH have also done other DIY... hmmm..... tempting]

Scarborough Castle is a great visit with stunning views and there is no shortage of hot chocolate and wine providing establishments here. Perfect for a 3-4 day jolly.

Was also going to suggest Stirling, we had a day and night there a few summers ago on way to visit family further north and it was lovely.

if Bath / Oxford worked for you, how about Cardiff? Castle and museum in the middle of town. Bay is brilliant on a sunny day. Not to spend either.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/04/2023 21:07

York!

Lots to do and, it's basically one big pootle and coffee opportunity with cobbled streets and medieval buildings.

Mumof1andacat · 20/04/2023 21:18

A bit of the seaside! We like Weymouth. Easy by train. Good local buses around the area. The jurassic coast is always lovely.

emmathedilemma · 20/04/2023 21:19

I dispute that Glasgow has more to do than Edinburgh! If you’ve got family in Northumberland then Alnmouth to Edinburgh is only an hour by train so easily done as a day trip. York is also good for a city break.
depending on how far you want to travel then Aviemore has plenty to do for families.

Findyourneutralspace · 20/04/2023 21:21

Why not just go to Northumberland? It’s lovely and if you have family there you can go back whenever, thus reducing FOMO. It’s a lovely part of the world

1dayatatime · 20/04/2023 21:21

A Cardiff / Swansea / Gower combination covers most tastes.

Colinorpercy · 20/04/2023 23:20

i much prefer Stirling Castle to Edinburgh Castle and you’ve also got the Wallace Monument, Safari Park (which you can drive round or just have a wander about in), handy for the Trossachs, there’s Bannockburn museum which is meant to be great too. As PP said, the Falkirk Wheel and Kelpies are both great too and could still go to Edinburgh/Glasgow for a day if you fancied it.

SpringLobelia · 21/04/2023 13:08

I am bowled over by all these suggestions- most of them I had not considered at all! I am going to have alot of fun researching. Smile thank you all.

Bournemouth is lovely and has a great beach x

Kathsmum · 22/04/2023 06:54

Scottish schools break up earlier so you may get a deal if it’s not their hols? Also re Northumberland / look at new park at alnwick gardens. Getting rave reviews.
