We have a child free weekend coming up in May, looking for recommendations as to where to go?
We're in northern England so somewhere northern England or southern Scotland.
Open to suggestions ... remote or city? Hotel or lodge?
No budget as such but don't want to spend a fortune but want it to be nice

Just been to Whitby it was great, Liverpool is a great Northern destination too.

Loads to see and do or just relax

Liverpool - donthibernate.co.uk

Where do I begin? There is so much to see and do in Liverpool. Have a look at our page …

What kind of things do you like? City? Countryside? Beach?

We live near Whitby so go quite often but love Whitby.

We're open to any suggestions for either cities or somewhere rural or the beach

What about Northumberland? Marvellous beaches, cute little towns, it’s got everything you could want for a few day’s break.

BeeBB · 10/04/2023 19:31

I’d go Northumberland although not sure of a hotel and you probably don’t want to self cater, Edinburgh or the Lakes.

What time of year are you going as the Scottish Schools break up mid June so all are likely to be busy if around then.

Grantley Hall. Everytime. Ripon area

PaigeMatthews · 10/04/2023 19:40

Whitby
York.
Harrogate.
Liverpool.
Leeds.
Ribby Hall near Preston is popular.

Edinburgh. The most fantastic place.

May is usually a great month for wildlife watching, so that might be another reason for going to Northumberland. I'd probably want to visit a nice garden too.

namechange0102 · 10/04/2023 21:16

Thank you for your response.
We actually got married at Grantley and love the place but want to go a bit further afield.

We looked at Edinburgh but the prices were astronomical- £950 for a 3 star hotel.

I think we'll look further in to Northumberland, can anyone recommend any places?

Bamburgh is really nice and has a lovely beech, it's also close to Lindisfarne which is a lovely day trip.

SwedishEdith · 10/04/2023 21:24

Staithes.
We stayed in a lovely BnB in Howick once. Great breakfasts.

emmathedilemma · 10/04/2023 21:50

There’s a few big events on in Edinburgh in May (a harry styles, bank holiday weekend and marathon festival triple whammy being one of them) which are making hotel prices hideous.
My discerning relatives love this place in Alnmouth. https://www.stvaleryalnmouth.com/

I don't know what it's like now, the one hotel I remember in Northumberland is the White Swan in Alnwick, which rather uniquely has a dining room kitted out from the Olympic, the sister ship of the Titanic.

Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales is lovely, we stayed in a lodge at Bainbridge Ings. Eyemouth is also lovely and can venture to Holy Island or Beadnell. We also love the lodges at Fallbarrow in Bowness.

Minervia · 11/04/2023 18:42

Why don't you do something totally different and have a city break in Manchester. Stay in the Hilton tower and see the bright lights.
Or the Lake District. The Inn on the Lake at Glenridding is gorgeous. Or somewhere more remote like 1692 at Wasdale.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 11/04/2023 18:50

We recently had a lovely couple of nights staying in Durham (Indigo Hotel) and exploring the Northumberland coast by day.

Folkishgal · 11/04/2023 18:50

Hexham in Northumberland would be a lovely base to stay at and you could travel to Bamburgh, Alnwick, Morpeth, visit Hadrian's wall and even go through to Durham or Newcastle by train easy enough!

York is also lovely!!
