Windsor Any Travel Tips?

I am planning to visit Windsor on Saturday. I am definitely going to visit the Windsor Castle, however can someone recommend me some coffee shops or restaurants where we can enjoy our day. Besides is it worth visiting some other town next to Windsor?

Have you pre booked your castle tickets? Best to do so.

Duchess of Cambridge opposite the castle is nice for food (book a table)

Windsor Royal Shopping is the old station and a pretty setting.

Wander down to the river and across the bridge to Eton.

And walk along Park Street and through Cambridge Gate for spectacular view of the Long Walk.

thank you very much for your recommendations. Is there any restaurant or coffee shop that you can recommend?

Joining in as we're coming to Windsor for 4 days in June. We like to spend one day away on a train or bus trip somewhere but can't seem to find any local companies doing this.
All I can find are day trips to Windsor, not from it IYSWIM

While I was waiting a research I have found out Egham with its well-known for its Beauty - Royal Holloway University of London is 15 minutes by bus from Windsor

I think you could easily fill a day just in Windsor.

RH is nice but it's just a university campus.

Saville Gardens or Virginia Water are lovely.

Trains from Windsor take just under an hour to get to Waterloo Station, London - loads to see and do in that area.

I wouldn't bother with Egham. Not considered a tourist spot locally.

You don't really need a cafe recommendation- just pick one you like in the Old Station.

If you want to go for a walk, Saville Gardens is a good place. Plenty of parking and not far out of Windsor. Equally you can just head up the Long Walk and go from there.

Sorry we were wanting to go out west or something rather than into London.

It will be really busy there over the Easter weekend, so book absolutely everything in advance. Check closure times for St George's Chapel for Easter services - it is a busy working church. There are some nice restaurants and cafes just over the bridge in Eton - only a 10 minute walk.

redspottedmug · 06/04/2023 13:51

There are loads of places to eat around the castle, including the chains, but also at the bottom of Peascod Street it's slightly less frenetic. Nice Turkish down there.
Definitely book!

What about Oxford? Coaches go there from Windsor

Another vote for Egham not being worth a visit. I also enjoyed one of the boat trips, partly as I love a nose at posh houses. You could walk over to Eton.

Windsor's pretty small so it's easy to wander around.

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2023 14:12

I'd probably head into Eton to eat, but there are plenty of coffee shops and restaurants to choose from.
There are some quirky shops in Eton, so have a look round.
I live too close to eat there really, but if I had to choose, I'd go to Al-Fassia, but I've not been for years. I sometimes eat at the King and Castle as it is cheap and has an outside balcony area
The Christopher Wren hotel food is nice, and there's Brown's - both have a river view.
A bit further out, there's a Harvester in Old Windsor that's by the river. Old Windsor is about 3 miles from Windsor.
If you look on eating out guides, many places will be listed as Windsor, but they'll be miles from the castle.

The river trip is worth doing. Best view of the castle.
The Long Walk is long but nice
Saville Garden is good.
You can take a tour bus, but I've not been on it. It probably covers Runnymede.

The Theatre Royal is lovely and puts on some good plays.
There's also the Old Fire Station.
For a cinema, you'll need to go to Maidenhead.

Egham used to be delightful but the little shops disappeared after the supermarkets opened. Has a few nice charity shops.
Slough charity shops are great, but you'll need to rummage. Slough also has a lot of world food type shops. Shopwise, there's not much there other than TK Maxx and Primark. You can walk from Windsor to Slough. It's about 2 miles on foot, and flat, but you can also get a train.

Watch where you are staying. If the hotel is the Slough-Windsor Hotelname, it will be in Slough.

If I wanted to head out somewhere, I'd look at Cookham for the Stanley Spencer gallery, Marlow or Henley for riverside. Otherwise, I'd head towards Richmond and Hampton Court.

If you want fancy meals out, there's the Waterside and the Fat Duck in Bray, but that's just outside Maidenhead. I've not been, so can't recommend them.

If you have DC who are under about 8 yrs old, there's Legoland, but if older there's Thorpe Park or Chessington and neither are very far.

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2023 14:21

You can get a train to Oxford. You need to go from Windsor Central to Slough. From there, you might need to change at Reading.

Thamesheron · 06/04/2023 14:25

Don’t bother with Egham . Suggest Marlow or Henley though both train journeys will involve changing .

if you only have a day though Windsor itself together with the Castle and maybe the Long Walk up from the castle will probably be enough . There are lots of restaurants in Windsor .. recommend the Real Greek ( a chain but this one is lovely )

RaraRachael · 06/04/2023 14:29

Thanks we're sorted. An afternoon's horse racing at Newbury - fairly easily accessed by train from Windsor 🙂

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2023 14:30

If you are only there for the day, just do Windsor and Eton. Eton is only across the bridge from Windsor.
If you are visiting the Castle, that will take up most of the day.

djenny92 · 06/04/2023 14:38

Thank you very much for your advise!!!

Ok we moved from Windsor 6 months ago- the best coffee shop isa lovely old school Italian place at the bottom of the hill from the castle- near the bridge over into Eton- run by fabulous Italians.

There is also a very nice one in Eton on the left hand side of the road as you go over the bridge that's all cakes and vintage style

There's also a Gail's

Restaurant wise it's a bit lacking. The branch of cote is in a very nice setting on the river, as is Browns

The Real Greek is quite nice

Theres a lovely old school pub next to the entrance to the long walk - that has nice food

Cherryblossom1985 · 06/04/2023 14:48

We did Windsor Castle last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.
We had dinner in Bills restaurant in the shopping village. It may be advisable to book.
There are a few nice looking coffee shops there too, although we didn't try them.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/04/2023 15:11

@KirstenBlest yes that's a different one but is nice too

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2023 20:33

Thanks. I remember when there were lots of pubs in Eton. It's changed.
Another change is the number of people who have dogs. Mainly poodle crosses, it seems.
