City break with teens

I'd like to book a couple of nights in a city over the Easter break with Dh, ds17 and ds13.
They like cool shops and places to eat, and are happy with a bit of culture / history.

Ds1 also needs to start thinking about Uni applications so whilst this won't be the main focus, I want to start subtly introducing him to other U.K. cities that he might consider (he's very focused on London and for some reason is quite ant Northern cities)

We've spent a lot of time in London, and know Birmingham, Norwich, Nottingham and Cambridge well.

I fancy Liverpool (never been), but would love some other recommendations of cities that are cool for teenagers.

I was going to say Liverpool. How about Manchester or Newcastle?

crumpet · 12/03/2023 16:33

Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, York

Bath and Canterbury not north but nice places to be in

We did a tour of possible university cities last Easter- it was great fun! We looked at Newcastle, Manchester, Sheffield, Lancaster, Nottingham and Hull- a large loop. DS found it really helpful, as much to decide where he didn't want to be as to think about contenders (he didn't like Nottingham campus, but loved the city; loved Sheffield but shouldn't find a course suitable).
In the end, his firm choice is none of those we looked at. A complete left-field suggestion last summer turned out to be the one he really liked.

That's quite a road trip @QueenofLouisiana!

Our teenagers loved Liverpool - so much so that we are planning a return trip.
Bristol was another success. If you don't mind flying, Belfast was another hit.

RampantIvy · 12/03/2023 18:53

York

EnthENd · 12/03/2023 19:01

Do you know what degree DS1 might do? That could direct you to cities with universities that are well-regarded for that subject. (Obviously places like Cambridge and Durham are well-regarded full stop).

Liverpool if Fab, loads to see and do for all budgets.

Bold Street and Lark Lane for food.
The Different stuff
Williamson tunnles
Western approaches
liverpoolwarmuseum.co.uk
My top tip is the speed boat tour of the docks, its a real nice and informative way to see some of the dockland area, and if you are up for it they will take you to a section of dock with no speed limit and take the boat up to full speed, its fantastic but wrap up warm.

Its also a good base for other Cities, Chester Llandudno etc is all about an hours drive away

LaurelGrove · 13/03/2023 08:53

Yes, Liverpool is indeed your best option. Lots to do, really interesting history and a lot of fun. We had a blast there last year (14 and 17 year olds).

LaurelGrove · 13/03/2023 08:54

Bath could be another option. There is a lot to do there as well. Or Oxford?

Zola1 · 13/03/2023 09:12

Another vote for Liverpool, loads to do including the museums, art gallery etc, Beatles stuff, tunnels. Loads of shopping, plenty of interesting places to eat (not Liverpool 1, more Bold Street type area). Other stuff going on in the city centre like the adult arcades, escape rooms etc.

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 13/03/2023 09:15

Bristol. The HMS Great Britain is am absolutely brilliant ship museum. Loads of nice places to eat and hang out around the harbour

WelHong · 13/03/2023 09:20

Bristol!

QuietlyConfident · 13/03/2023 09:21

Bristol is both historical and cool. But Liverpool is a good shout.

Soproudoflionesses · 13/03/2023 09:26

Liverpool is fantastic.
But if theybare interested in history, in partucular tue royaks, Windsor is a lovely place - not a city but l loved it there and 2 nights was plenty

Soproudoflionesses · 13/03/2023 09:26

Sorry for typos!

Funf · 13/03/2023 13:16

Its worth noting Liverpools Museums are free of charge and still very good
The Maritime is great, nice location and some great exhibits, the smuggling section is very interesting.
Another popular place is the Baltic market

If they like Vintage stuff 69A has been open for over 40 years, the staff are great and very helpful

@EnthENd - he's not made any firm decisions yet but is very London-centric in his thinking (UCL / London school of Economics) so just want to open his eyes that other cities are available!

Sounds like Liverpool is a winner, with Bristol as runner-up. I've not been to either and want it to be a fun couple of days for us all, including ds13.
