Lovely Mumsnetters,

We, for the first time, basically need to take our 6yo foster child on holiday.

The safeguarding criteria is that she is not in our room, nor in a hotel room on her own. This led me to think that a Haven-type caravan holiday would be spot-on.

I love the idea of the pool, crazy golf, etc. But what we would really like is a kids club where there are young people entertaining the kids for part of the day, rather than us 60yo.

I know I can look at Haven, Centerparcs, etc. , but what I am really interested in is the little local gems that are tried and tested by Mumsnetters.

Are you allowed to leave her in other people’s care?

Haven doesn’t usually have kids’ clubs, but it has activities you can sign kids up for, usually an hour or so at a time (climbing, kayaking, tennis, etc). There are usually family activities too (craft, pond dipping, bushcraft, etc) that you can all do together. Different sites have different activities, and it’s best to sign up for them well in advance (you get sent a link after booking). We always look for ones with good pools!

Cofton Holidays in Devon is an excellent park and has everything you mentioned. There’s also Freshwater Beach in Dorset which even has its own private beach!

Lasram Bay in Devon ticks all of your boxes

Yes, we can treat her as we would our own children. Kids Clubs would have DBS and trained staff.

She goes to school, can have babysitters, goes to Sunday School and Ballet. It's all fine.

Freshwater is fantastic. My family have been going there for over 60 years!

Just research the cliff falls before you go.

Would you be open to hiring a cottage? There are some lovely (but expensive) ones that have shared pools, play equipment, kids activities.

We stayed at Clydey Cottages a few years ago and the kids loved it - it’s not cheap though!

Dalmeny hotel in st Anne's if that's in your location

Ribby hall village, bit like centre Parcs but more to do, there’s a small zoo, farm, kids club and usual activities, swimming pool with slides and hot tub and about 20mins from Blackpool which yes people grown and moan about but children at 6 love.p, my kids love the Pleasure Beach theme park and the slots all good fun for 1 day then back to Ribby hall for peace and quiet. They have multiple restaurants and take always even a Pappa John’s. The accommodation it lovely, little bungalows and three fantastic adventure playgrounds. Worth taking a look as it’s not too pricey compared to Centre Parcs.

Where abouts are you based and how far are you willing to travel?

clareykb · 12/03/2023 19:48

Crieff Hydro in Scotland- They have lodges and multi space family rooms (so you could each have your own bedroom with shared bathroom- Great purpose built kids club and stuff like horse riding etc.

Following with interest - some of the suggestions sound great.

I haven't been myself but Darwin Forest is on my list (having seen it recommended quite a bit). Prices are similar to Center Parcs, though.

Another vote for Ladram Bay.
Stunning coastline, with a pool, crazy golf, play park, soft play and a kids club. The private beach is pebbles but half sandy at low tide and they will love the rock pools!

Parkdean have beautiful lodges. We've been to Ty Mawr in Wales and Cayton Bay in Scarborough and the lodges and sites are lovely and very clean, kids activities are amazing and lots to do in driving distance.
