North Wales recommendations

Can anyone recommend a base for us to spend a week in North Wales.in June?

We like walking - gentle to moderate. I'd like to go on one (or more) of the mountain railways. Boys like kayaking (not too difficult water) and that sort of thing. I'd like to go to a spa day (the boys might do a more strenuous walk that day).

Not worried about eating out, happy to self cater, so don't particularly need restaurants. We are all drivers but would be nice to not have hours of driving to do all the time and be central to the activities we want to do.

Any recommendations for anything appreciated...including a base.

I think Conwy may work for you as a base.

Castle, walled town, mountains, beautiful Quay and easy to get to lots of other places too.

Thanks!

Conwy, without a doubt

Fab. We can start planning now and see what accommodation there is available.

We had a beautiful lodge at Ty Mawy Holiday Park. From there we did Bodnant Gardens, Penrhyn Castle, Portmerion and Zipworld.

conwy definitely
lovely town with great road connections so easy to explore the area. We loved Beaumaris, Conwy, three decent national trust properties in the area and dd had a great time at surf snowdonia

ShanghaiDiva · 26/02/2023 16:25

If you plan to visit a lot of castles definitely worth getting a Cadw card

Another vote for Conwy

Conwy is a great base, just look a few miles outside for a better price

Some nice local walking at Aber Falls

Kayaking is found in many places but Llangollen is known for it ( About 1 hour away)

Some of the off the beaten track stuff

The Fun ship, the story of how it came to be parked there is great, its just about to be used in a new TV series three little birds I think, you can walk up to the perimeter fence, just a strange thing to see.

Bit further afield is Criccieth, Llanbedrog and Abersoch, well worth a visit

CottonSock · 27/02/2023 14:51

If you stay in Conwy then try and find a place with parking included.
It is a great place though.

Moveforward · 27/02/2023 18:18

Yes, I've noticed the parking issue when I looked at the town in more detail

Luckily, as we live in a similar place so it was on my radar And it was noticeable that parking wasn't mentioned on a lot of the properties.

My parents went a few years ago and had to move between different car parks and said there were parking wars going on.
I stayed a bit out of town so didn't have an issue..

SkiingIsHeaven · 27/02/2023 20:34

Go to Llanberis.

Next to Mount Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa). Various walks up or get the train.

Also on Lake Padarn. Good for paddle boarding, kayaking and swimming).

Close to the A55 which takes you to all of the coastal resorts, castles, beaches and bridges onto Anglesey, a beautiful island off the mainland.

You can also head down the A55 to Chester. Lovely Roman City with old Roman walls, amphitheater and the famous Rows.

You can't beat North Wales.

My MIL was from Conwy and we love it there but don’t tend to stay there because of the parking. We tend to stay Betws y coed, Llanrwst or Tal y bont is just outside conwy and we rented a house for 6 which was nice called Llwyn y Coed Isaf.

UsingChangeofName · 27/02/2023 21:08

Llanberis or Betws y Coed area for me.
I mean, I personally would look for somewhere on Anglesey, as I love the beaches and the sea, and then travel across for a couple of days walking.
I think the lack of parking in Conwy would put me off.
Bangor is convenient to get to the different places, though not a 'pretty' town itself (might make it more affordable?)

cestlavielife · 27/02/2023 21:12

Betws y coed
Surf snowdonia has a hilton with spa but also camping pods

Beddgelert might work for you too. Lots of walks nearby, and I've seen kayaking on Llyn Gwynant which is just up the road. You're also not far from Porthmadog where two of the steam trains start from.

There's also a reasonable sized Tesco's and either Aldi or Lidl in Porthmadog, which is handy if you're self catering.

NCTDN · 28/02/2023 08:49

My vote would be betwsycoed too.

Peradventure55 · 28/02/2023 09:17

On the conwy parking issue, Go out of town towards Bangor, through the arch and take the next right towards the council offices. It is free parking there on weekdays and a two minute walk past the cricket pavilion into town

ILiveAt64ZooLane · 28/02/2023 11:59

First time I visited Conwy, when DH was my boyfriend, we climbed Conwy mountain like he used to every summer, it’s almost become a family initiation, if you can’t make it to the top, that’s a red flag 😂 DS girlfriend passed with flying colours last year.
