Central London on a Sunday afternoon in Feb

I am taking DC (12 & 6) to meet an old friend coming from the USA with her two DC (15 & 11), in central London on a Sunday afternoon at the end of Feb. Old friend has been to London before but not for years and although I grew up in London, I now live outside and my DC don't go in that often. Looking for recommendations of things to do/see that might please all ages/budgets (I have a limited one!) please! She says her DC will be happy wandering about, going on a double-decker bus, getting something to eat etc which sounds fine to me - although I know my 6yo won't really like just wandering around - will get tired/bored and start to whinge 😂- so it would be good to have a kind of plan. They're going to be staying around Bloomsbury so pretty central. TIA.

Southbank to Borough Market to get some food?

B Bakery do an afternoon tea bus tour.

Frameless/Twist Museum.

British museum to look at mummies?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/02/2023 07:09

Boat trip plus lunch on the Southbank?

It’s an awkward combination of ages, but would the British Museum appeal for an hour or two?

I think I’d choose one thing and then combine it with a walk and lunch or tea.

Tate Modern (free) then a walk along the south bank to watch the buskers, followed by pasta at Padella in Borough Market.

Afternoon Tea double decker tour bus.

Selfridges Tech Floor.

Charles Dickens Museum.

Churchill War Rooms (previously called the Cabinet War Rooms.

Embankment to Greenwich on the river boats.

Rather than get a bus tour you can save a lot by getting a standard bus which goes past interesting sights and sightsee that way - you'll get ideas on the Transport for London website. You can get the Tube back and the kids might enjoy that too.

A potter around the British Museum could be good for the kids to get to know each other - the older ones could go off together and you and your friend can take the 6 year old to stuff they would be interested in.

And frequent stops for cake to keep everyone happy.

Assuming the weather is okay, how about

Trafalgar Sq
Catch number 15 bus to Tower of London & Tower Bridge (get off just after London Bridge to....
Nip up to 120 Fenchurch St roof garden (free, just turn up) or prebook Skygarden
Walk to Tower Bridge then
(A) walk along Soutbank past Golden Hinde, HMS Belfast to Tate (poss via Borough Mkt)
Or
(B) get the Thames Clipper/Uber boat to Battersea Power Station (plenty of shops and restaurants) and do the Chimney Lift
You could show them the new US Embassy and glass swimming pool at Nine Elms if you are feeling keen or pack a ball/frisbee and go to Battersea Park (there is also Go Ape there and a little zoo).

Camden market, Babylon Park, street food.

Thank you! I like the afternoon tea on a bus idea but unfortunately it's a bit beyond my budget at the moment. We're going to meet at the British Museum as DD wants to see the mummies and then we'll probably take a double decker maybe to the south bank or Trafalgar Square or something. Forecast is dry and not too cold, so that's something!

Have a nice day!

If it's next Sunday stay away from Wembley!

It was yesterday. British Museum was shut due to staff being on strike!!! Shock Guess I should have checked first, but didn't even occur to me. Ah well, kids had a blast anyway - took a double decker bus from BM to south bank, wandered along up to London Eye, they all (including the 15yo) loved the playground there and then we got fish and chips takeaway. Everyone was happy! Simple pleasures!!!
