I'm really struggling to think where we could go.

They enjoy getting out and about and doing activities, last year we went to the lake district and did kayaking, tree trekking and some lovely walks amongst other things

This year we can only manage a couple of nights away so don't want to travel too far. We are in the North West

We have done Edinburgh, York, Whitby, Wales (many many times) the lake district.

This year DS wants to explore some caves (🤔) and DD is happy as long as we are all together. I'd ideally like a nice cottage or lodge near a nice town to explore with a few activities nearby we could book the kids on. Any ideas?!

Thank you 😊

Northumbria around Beadnell. Great beach, SUP lessons, boat trip to the Farne Islands and a couple of caves in easy driving distance. Alnwick has the castle, Barter Books and cake shops.
Or Forest of Galloway area. Cycling, canoeing, dark skies. Kirkcudbright is quite arty.

Good ideas, thank you!
We've never been to Northumbria so it would be good to go somewhere new

Yes to Northumberland Coast. Look up Fifth Point Diving for their Seal Safaris out of Seahouses I went last year and it was really an amazing experience.

Poole's Cavern or Blue John cavern in the Peak District. Matlock and Buxton are nice places to explore.

Agree with the above post, but Matlock Bath is a bit nicer than Matlock. There’s local river tubing and gorge walking, plus walks and caves at Heights of Abraham. Nearby there’s Black Rocks, Peak Rail and Crich Tramway, Bakewell and Chatsworth.

Firstly the Northwest of the UK has lots to offer, sometimes we miss some of the local stuff.
Caves in the north west
Crank Caverns only small

Another small cave at Dyserth

I would say North Wales fits the bill for most of your needs as I feel whilst you have been many times you will have missed some of the gems
