I'm looking for recommendations where to stay in Cornwall for February half term. A new part of the world for me. Ideally, somewhere with lovely beaches for walks in a small town or a village with interesting shops and lots of places of interest nearby. DC are14 and 12. Thanks

My advice is don't come in Feb! It will likely be very wet and cold, not ideal for walks especially with DC.

Falmouth,Looe, keep away from Newquay although beaches are wonderful town is awful especially in winter.Lots of interesting places to visit,Heligan,Eden,St Ives.Newlyn for art.Bude canal beautiful beaches. So much choice just hope the weather is good.Have fun.

Fowey would fit that. It's a lovely little town with plenty nearby. Falmouth is also nice. There's loads of lovely places to visit. Don't have any expectations of the weather though.

Rain rain rain rain ... it's brightening up! 15 mins later: rain rain rain rain ...

LighthouseCat · 08/01/2023 18:32

I was just going to say Fowey. Some lovely walks nearby and very pretty town.

We discovered Porthleven last time we went and really liked it.

We went to Newquay last Feb half term and had a lovely time - lots of walks, explored the north coast villages, did coasteering- yes it rained but it’s feb so expected it - DDs 12/10. We had a place with a hot tub and an open fire so spent lots of time in that - would definitely do it again

What about staying in Truro as most places are reachable as it's central.

Same here. Been going for years and never been to Porthleven but loved it

Loved a trip to Falmouth in early March last year. Weather was definitely not the best: some rain and pretty cold, but plenty to do & nice warm coffee shops!

Fivemoreminutes1 · 08/01/2023 19:54

Fowey is a good shout. It’s close to the Eden Project which has lots to see at all times of year and the big domes are heaven when it’s cold outside. They also have ice skating there until late February.
There’s also a nearby Shipwreck Treasure museum which we all found fascinating, DC included!

Padstow

sittingonacornflake · 08/01/2023 20:01

I like St Ives for shops. And beaches. Beautiful town.

CaptainCorellisXylophone · 08/01/2023 20:09

Newquay is grim: avoid.
Padstow is nice, but there's very little there.

The weather will make it or break it. If it's bad you need a big enough / nice enough holiday cottage for it to be manageable.

Hottoffeesauce · 09/01/2023 10:16

Falmouth fits the bill.

dontdarepokethebear · 09/01/2023 17:51

Thank you for all the suggestions - so helpful. I know it’s not the ideal time to go away, but we have low expectations of the weather. We’ll pack the wet weather gear.

Not sure if you’ve booked yet OP but St Ives is perfect in Feb, we’ve always had blue skies amongst the cold and rain, certainly not spring or summer weather but great all the same. Lots of interesting art galleries and shops to look in as well as a wide range of places to eat. Highly recommend!

HeliosPurple · 29/01/2023 15:34

We used to go all the time in February and October half terms when my children were little. Windswept walks on empty beaches with the dogs - fab. I am originally from the cold and windy East cost of Scotland so quite hardy!!

RecordsTurning · 29/01/2023 16:08

St Ives is still lovely even if the weather is bad. We have spent a lot of school holidays there, kids are teens now and still love it in good and bad weather.

Jabiru · 09/02/2023 22:46

I have a holiday let in St Ives, my two teenagers love it, even in February.

come and stay at ours!

Makemetry · 12/02/2023 20:41

Cornwall is better in the winter. You can actually park the car, get into a pub and go anywhere you want. Just wrap up warm. It’s obviously going to be cold so the weather won’t be able to disappoint either.

Jabiru · 13/02/2023 23:01

I was in St ives two weeks ago and it was honestly lovely.

Thank you again for all the suggestions. We were so lucky with the weather as we had some glorious days and Cornwall was looking stunning. I hate to think how crowded it must get in the summer, but we had no issues dining out and finding things to do in the off season. Only a few shops & attractions were closed. The locals were lovely - great vibes all round. I would definitely visit again at this time of year.

That’s lovely to hear. I had new photos taken for our holiday let on the Tuesday, I couldn’t believe the colour of the sky when I saw the proofs….and you’re right about the busy season!
