FormerlySpeckledyHen · 30/12/2022 18:00

Hopefully going to Sunderland in February for the football and would like somewhere nice to stay within 45 minutes drive of the stadium 🏟?
Possibly staying for 2-3 nights so also looking for ideas of where to go along the coast for good food ( love fish) and places to see .
Thank you.

Try North- Seaburn for fish/seafood. It’s just opened and is great

Seaham Hall is lovely! Downeys in Seaham is good for fish & chips too.
The Clarion at Boldon could be a cheaper and family friendly option. It’s got a nice pool and cinema, pubs etc within walking distance.

Further afield in Tynemouth is The Grand, we send overseas colleagues there and it’s always a hit. Riley’s fish shack is close by and a great place to eat (be warned it’s down some steep steps and they only have outside seating on deckchairs on the beach but the food is fantastic).

Seaham hall and ram side hall are both lovely but luxury and can be quite expensive. They’re are lots of nice hotels in Sunderland itself try the sea burn inn or the roker hotel or the grand they’re all right on the seafront and very close to the stadium. There is also the Hilton next to the stadium or even the premier inn in Sunderland town centre. There are lots of lovely restaurants, you can’t beat fish and chips from the beach but in town there is Asiana fusion which is Thai Asian cuisine and has lovely views over the river. Marcelo’s is a nice Italian in town and there are lots of lovely Indian restaurants e.g goa, Mumbai silk, motiraj. In terms of places to see obviously seaburn beach which is lovely. Penshaw monument if you like a walk with a view and a park attached and a lovely tearoom! You could also have a day in Newcastle and Durham both have excellent transport links! Hope you have a lovely trip x

Thank you for all the recommendations for food and hotels - spoiled for choice now. We’ll drop into Durham on our way back south I expect.
Really looking forward to our trip.

As a kid many decades ago we visited relatives in Sunderland and I have very fond memories of my time there. Screamed blue murder on a Big Dipper and pleaded to do it again!
