So, trying to find a UK seaside destination for me, DH and DD(15).

We all would like a reasonably quiet sandy beach with clean loos!

DH would like somewhere near enough for a day trip where there are museums and art galleries.

DD would like quirky shops and a place for a day trip with " normal" shops.

The last few years we have been to Robin Hood's Bay. Whitby suited DD, both DH and DD liked York and we all liked Sandsend Beach.

However, the cottage we have had is already booked up. I could look for another cottage in the area, but wondered if there was somewhere else that we would like. We are based in Wiltshire, but happy to travel.

Any ideas where I could be looking?
Thanks

Nairn, Lossiemouth or Hopeman. Fly/train to Inverness and hire a car. Loads of NTS properties and local museum, cycling and walking trails. Swimming pool and shopping in Inverness or Elgin. Dolphin spotting. Great fish and chips.

Definitely Wells-Next-The-Sea. (The Globe is a must visit pub!)

I’d suggest Suffolk. Southwold with its amazing quirky pier, Walberswick, Aldeburgh and the amazing Sutton Hoo. Had a lovely time here.

Second vote for Northumberland.

Cornwall or the Lakes

Good call. You can't beat crabbing at Walberswick!

Folkestone. Beautiful sandy beach, harbour with lots of cafes and bars. Nice restaurants, artists quarter. Kent is a big county with loads of lovely places, some might be a bit far for day trips though?

Or at the other end of the UK the east neuk of Fife is beautiful, as is Troon on the west coast.

Whitley bay!

Anglesey? Benllech has a lovely beach and not far from Beaumaris for shops plus lots to do in Bangor etc.
Also Llandudno. South west Scotland is good too as you've got places like rockcliffe as well as places like castle Douglas.
Also Lake District and lancashire coastal areas have a good mix of things to do

Oh my! So many places for me to investigate! Thank you x

North Wales has plenty to see and do you can drive for 30 mins and its totally different it has Mountains Moor land, beaches some pebbles some sand.
Towns Like Llangollen, Chester, Llandudno etc.
Some ideas here
www.donthibernate.co.uk
Take Llandudno the beach is nice but can get busy but 10 mins drive out of town you have two excellent but Quiet beaches

Some often missed places

The Llyn Peninsular is fantastic and still has quiet places
www.visitwales.com/destinations/north-wales/snowdonia/hidden-beauty-exploring-llyn-peninsula-aonb

The Conwy, Llandudno areas are great bases for visiting Liverpool 70 mins drive, Snowdonia 20- 30 mins, Llyn Peninsular 1 hour drive if you fancy a change

I'd always say Pembrokeshire (although agree with others, not Tenby in school hols!) - there are lovely beaches all around the coast, plus you'll get quirky shops and culture in places like Narbeth.

Or The Gower pensinula is also beautiful - and puts you close to Swansea for shopping.

Finally - Lyme Regis is beautiful; beach, quirky shops, lots along the Jurassic coast to see, plus close to Exeter for shopping, cathedral, etc.

August 2023 - definitely Falmouth. Tall Ships are coming to town and it's amazing!

IrmaGord · 30/12/2022 09:43

We go to Whitby about twice a year but can second North Wales. There's so many place to visit there and some absolutely beautiful beaches with stunning scenery. We went in July and had great weather too. Have also been in August and the best thing is it wasn't horrendously busy like lots of other places that have been mentioned (including the North Yorkshire coast).

tealgate · 30/12/2022 09:44

Wittering near Chichester, Portsmouth for shopping and museums, Arundel for quirky shops, Chichester for Pallant House art gallery.

Ormally · 30/12/2022 17:41

I love Southwold and that area (favourite seaside along with Whitby) but not for the period of most of July and August - clean toilets were part of the OP's brief and unfortunately that's not always the case in summer (often queues too) unless you go to ones that are quite a long way from the pier, in town.

Southwold in the early days of September, though - even at the end of the school holidays - or May if the weather's nice: definitely.

Saltburn has a brilliant beach as does Filey. Filey is nearer to york.
Near Filey is hunmanby gap which is a great sandy beach. Filey isn’t too far from flamborough which has great coves and I like Bridlington but many don’t. There are two huge beaches in Bridlington, a harbour and the old town is quirky. The main town is a typical northern seaside town. Sewerby just north of Bridlington is a lovely village with a few attractions
The beaches are amazing on Holderness but there’s not much in the towns.

Mammyloveswine · 30/12/2022 17:55

Northumberland..newcastle and the metro centre for a day trip..Alnwick is lovely and quirky... Whitley bay has the traditional seaside feel to it.
