Things to do near Chesterfield

We've just booked a cottage/house for February half term in Chesterfield. We have 3DDs 10-13 so looking for activities within an hour of Chesterfield to do. Planning a trip to Manchester and Sheffield but it would be nice for something different or any recommendations. TIA

Eyam might also be worth a couple of hours if DDs are interested in history. Agree with Cromford Mill - definitely worth visiting. We also like Hardwick Hall and Stainsby Mill which is also NT and nearby.

If you go up to Meadowhall there is a Ninja Warrior place close by if it's wet and you're looking for other options.

There is a climbing wall ‘rock up’ at Meadowhall if you go there. There are also several indoor climbing places in Sheffield if your girls are into that.

Sheffield city centre is really rubbish currently-
however the city itself is lovely, just in areas a couple of miles from the centre. You could have a little trip to Ecclesall Road and Endcliffe park or the Botanical gardens.

Chesterfield is a fairly basic market town but not to be written off for a short trip in to the market one day, there are some ok cafes and could have a walk near the canal.

Villages on the Sheffield side of the Peak District are worth a trip- Hathersage, Grindleford, the longshaw estate.

Cannon Hall is lovely - it’s where they film the channel 5 on the farm series

RampantIvy · 28/12/2022 23:20

Are NT properties open in February?
Second recommendation for YWP and Cannon Hall.

@LoveMyPiano @Bepis

The comment was mine.

And I absolutely stand by it.

Derbyshire is a GORGEOUS county, I know it very well. And I love Sheffield, btw, which most posters on here don't. (Although I think meadowhall is a boil on the arse of consumerist humanity).

But Chesterfield is a dive. DH comes from just outside there, and it makes him deeply unhappy

Everywhere has something nice if you care to look.
AS I said, I was brought up in Chesterfield and went to a lovely school there, and am sad that it has gone downhill in many aspects.

Don't see why you need to keep calling it a "dive" though - not even really helpful in answering the main question the OP posted.

Hardwick Hall closes through winter I believe.

I think Chatsworth re-opens in March.

If you head up to Yorkshire sculpture park , your Dc might find the mining museum nearby interesting..
I love Hardwick Hall , and Chatsworth, and Castleton

Also as Pp has mentioned Cresswell Crags is fantastic. Junction 28 on the m1 has a retail outlet with a Nike, Adidas and super dry stores

Thanks everyone, really helpful and looking into the options. Any recommendations for places to eat as well would be great 😊

If you are heading out towards Chatsworth, there is a nice country pub on the way (depending where you are staying in Chesterfield) - The Fox & Goose Inn, Old Brampton/Wadshelf.
There will be lots of places in Matlock/Matlock Bath and Bakewell, I'm sure.

If you like Indian food, West Bars Tandoori in Chesterfield is amazing. The best curries I've ever had.

NT opening times in Derbyshire:

Hardwick Hall house doesn't open until 18th February for exampl.

There is a super website and Facebook page called Peak District Kids. Lots of days out and walks all across the area of varied lengths and criteria (including pub en route).
