Looking for suggestions for areas please! Teen will be on his own with us, so we need plenty of activities eg SUP, canoeing, etc. Need beaches and hill walks for the dog, history stuff/pubs/cafes for DH and I.

Not Scotland (we live here), and not south coast/Devon/Cornwall just ‘cos we cba driving that distance esp with the dog.

the Lake District

Bamburgh

We had a wonderful holiday this summer in Sea Palling, Norfolk with teens and dogs. What made it for us was being so close to the beach (we rented St Benets through ERC cottages) so you could wander back and forth during the day and the sea there is very protected so you could always swim/SUP and we could walk along the beach to a cafe or take a drive to somewhere else

FleasNavidad · 10/12/2022 20:10

Posted too soon.

Bamburgh, Lindisfarne, Alnwick, Vindolanda
Barter Books
Lots of beaches and walks
Seahouses

Ahh sorry - forgot to say not Northumberland - we’ve done it to death over the years!

@CMOTDibbler That sounds ideal - will take a look at that

@Justellingthetruth where’s best in the Lake District for beaches?

We had a lovely stay at Fron Fawr in Wales. Really close to the beach, super for dogs and loads of activities nearby. If they’re fully booked, try Celtic Haven.

We loved the Llyn peninsula in North Wales. Fantastic beaches and close to hills. We visited Portmerion, did Zip World, slate museum and steam train.

JamNittyGritty · 11/12/2022 07:23

Snowdonia- coast near by, awesome mountain walks, canoeing etc

KendrickLamaze · 11/12/2022 07:28

We stayed in log cabins near snowdon. You can't leave the dog unattended and go out but it's super dog friendly and you have fire pits and outstanding views. We've been a few times with our dog. If you Google Graianog farm you'll find it.

We also go to Devon. It's a holiday park... I want to say John fowler and another one but both are by the most fantastic quiet beach with a walking trail. You would truly think you were abroad as it's outstanding.

Dovedale is very nice along with Buxton.

Watching with interest

ChickpeaPie · 11/12/2022 07:33

Agree with north wales, or Pembrokeshire if you ate up for venturing further south

SirChenjins · 11/12/2022 08:28

Thanks - will check these out Smile I’d been looking at N Wales last night online so good the hear those recommendations. We’ve been to Pembrokeshire (Tenby) a couple of times and absolute love it. Devon is just too much driving from here with the dog, beautiful though it is.

Just been here, dog friendly cottages/chalets with a lovely gym/pool/ health club on site. We’ve found the Northumbria beaches great for dogs as they go on for miles.

Sorry, just saw your previous post 😊

Gower Peninsula - great for watersports, dog friendly beaches and decent pubs

fifteenohfour · 15/12/2022 12:45

We used to go to the Lake District for adventure stuff way too expensive now. We went to Dumfries and Galloway last winter and it was amazing, rural quiet towns with rivers and adventure spots dotted around. It's also great for star gazing as it's got an observatory so they've made sure light pollution is low.

We call it the the lakes on a budget but that doesn't do it justice it really is a beautiful area in its own right.

Seaweedandsalt · 15/12/2022 12:45

Abersystwyth and Hafod Estate for long variety walks in beautiful surroundings

Quveas · 15/12/2022 12:48

I stayed near Goodwick / Fishguard for a couple of weeks in the suummer - fantastic for all the things you mention and more.

crosstalk · 15/12/2022 12:57

North Norfolk - Cromer has lovely beaches, plenty to do, dogs can walk on some of the beaches - or if not go further west to Wells next the Sea. Masses of sea food and cafes. Huge amount of wildlife. Depends on your budget.

Tessasanderson · 15/12/2022 13:03

Waterside House campsite. All the watersports etc you could want. They have glamping pods etc there. Dogs no issue and hundreds of walks available. They have the water taxi service running daily in the summer which can drop you off and collect which opens up loads of other walks.

You are just down from Pooley bridge which gets you pubs and some rather nice evening meals. The secret garden is lovely.

20 minutes from Pooley bridge you are in Carlisle which has Eden Rock bouldering. 30 min you can be in Keswick.

With regards to cost. Yes its now expensive to do things. However, walking is free still. You can nip down to the Glencoyne Car park via Aira Force and if you have your own SUP or canoe you can launch from there for free.

Having had a think about your requirements, what about a Road Trip?
I would stop one or two nights in Liverpool as it has loads to see and do in the city and surrounding area.

Some things outside of the city

Do a week in North Wales then perhaps a stop on the way home? Blackpool?? Every one should see it at least once

SirChenjins · 15/12/2022 16:38

We did toy with the idea of a road trip, but we a)don’t want to spend a lot of time driving and b)don’t want the dog to be in the car too much. We’d rather plonk ourselves somewhere for the fortnight and do day trips from there.

Loads of fab ideas here to work through - thanks so much! 😊
