Getting across London on day of train strikes

LoudSnoringDog · 30/11/2022 05:02

My son needs to get from Sidcup to Heathrow term 5 on dec 14th.
SE trains are striking so the option of getting a train into central London and tube is possible
im thinking bus to a tube station ( woolwich??) and Elizabeth line to LHR t5 but not sure if underground is also affected?
any London mnetters have any idea?!

Could he stay at a nearby hotel the night before and get a taxi to the airport?

CornishGem1975 · 30/11/2022 12:55

Personally I'd just book an airport transfer taxi locally?

GoonerGirl5231 · 30/11/2022 12:58

Tube will be running.

Skinnermarink · 30/11/2022 12:59

You can easily find out if the underground is affected, then plan accordingly.

There is no chance in hell I would risk getting across London on the underground the day of a flight. The underground will be heaving and if there is a delay on some lines, he will be screwed because there's a knock on effect far too often. Tell him to go the night more and stay in a local hotel. The stress will not be worth it.

SquirmOfEels · 30/11/2022 14:37

The tube should be running

So if you can reliably get to the tube then that's a reasonable way.. But allow plenty of time as it may well be busier than usual.

If it's a morning flight, staying near the airport the night before might be the best bet.

I disagree with this, in my experience the days of strikes tend to have a knock on quiet effect of other modes of transport like the tube. Especially now so many people have the option to WFH I think a lot of people do and it frees up the tube somewhat.

id do that but just leave extra time (as you would normally for a flight anyway)

MolesOnPoles · 30/11/2022 14:49

Tube should be fine, and as PP says it is usually very quiet on strike days. Assuming his flight isn’t first thing in the morning, bus or taxi to a tube station then zipping to Heathrow Woolf be easy.

I don’t know whether the Elizabeth Line would be affected by strikes, but that would be faster if not.

Book a local minicab. Cheaper than Uber for an airport run.

It’s a Wednesday… it’ll be fine! No need for such drama.
