Weekend break suggestions November (no kids!)

Hi all, my husband and I have a child free weekend at the end of November for our wedding anniversary and we're struggling with a location. Key points-
-we live in Greater Manchester - dont really want to drive longer than 2.5hrs
-have done Manchester, Liverpool, Chester and York multiple times
-London trains from Manchester are just a nightmare at the moment so ruled that out
-not interested in a spa break
-did the Lakes with the kids recently
-hotel room under £200 for one night!

Does anyone have any suggestions? We like ambling around a town/city, love food but not particularly fancy ie no requirement for Michelin or tasting menus. Have looked at Cheltenham and Stratford upon Avon but not sure about either? Any ideas I can research would be great!

Is it for 2 nights ? Could you afford ( money and time wise ) Budapest /krakow ?

AriettyHomily · 31/10/2022 11:44

Angelsey?

Harrogate is lovely, DH and I spent a weekend in November there mooching in the shops, in the pub and walking around the lovely park. Also v close to the country for walking.

Dogsgottabone · 31/10/2022 11:55

Or Buxton?

We found Stratford small and disappointingly ugly. That was a few years ago. It’s not just a smaller Chester, which I love.

Peak District is gorgeous and there are some really lovely places to eat. We stayed near Bakewell.

Thanks @summergone it's only for 1 night and I'd be reluctant as our youngest is only 1 and also if the flights are delayed we waste so much time!

Angelsey?

We went there in August to visit family!

Yes this is a possibility, we have done a day trip in the past. I'll check it out, thanks!

Ok good to know, that is enough for me to rule that out as we were on the fence anyway!

I'll check this out too, I just feel like the places will all be too small for us? Ideally we want a nice meal and then cocktails somewhere!

There’s a butterfly place near Stratford which was really good. Also plenty of restaurants and pubs. The centre is small and whoever did the planning permissions didn’t do a good job. Would Oxford be too far to travel?

BIWI · 31/10/2022 12:23

Why not go over to the East coast? Somewhere like Robin Hood's Bay? Glorious coast line.

Restlessinthenorth · 31/10/2022 12:46

Leeds or York? Both fab weekend break spots

MinnieMountain · 31/10/2022 16:43

Bristol if you don’t mind 3 hours on the train.
Stay at Brookes Guest House by the market, which has some great food stalls.
There are lots of nice places to eat (Root is my favourite) and a few speakeasy-style cocktail bars.

BIWI · 31/10/2022 17:24

Brooks Guest House is fabulous! And the food scene in Bristol is amazing. This restaurant, Sonny Stores, is absolutely brilliant.

mrshadders · 01/11/2022 09:14

Thank you everyone, I think we've decided on Leeds as we have never been! So any recommendations for food and things to do would be greatly appreciated!

Tropical World and Roundhay Park (north east of the city centre) are worth a visit - although I see from their website that you need to book an entry time.

BIWI · 01/11/2022 09:20

And a little bit further north, on the way to Harrogate, is Harewood house

BIWI · 01/11/2022 09:23

Where will you be staying?

Restlessinthenorth · 01/11/2022 11:16

Two new eating spots have opened in leeds. Cut and Craft and Ivy Asia. They both look incredible. Tabula Rasa cocktail bar is just across from them and also lovely, but you have so many choices! Hotels for every budget in leeds too
