Hi I'm looking for best places to move to in the uk for a young person.
My options so far are Central london, Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Bath, Exeter, Cheshire. These are what have been recommended to me the most.
If anyone has any more recommendations feel free to share your opinions and knowledge
Thanks

I’d plump for Bristol. It’s quite a small city but it always seems to be buzzy with lots going on. It has a strong sense of identity. Central London, if living there, would be hugely expensive, and both Oxford and Cambridge are expensive too and a lot of life centres around the Universities. Exeter is small, very studenty too. I don’t know Chester but you would be well placed for Liverpool, and a bit further away, Manchester, so lots on your doorstep. I’d wonder about Bath for a young person. Also pricey, maybe a bit staid.

London hands down. It doesn't need to be central necessarily (unless you've got a generous budget), there are loads of cool places further out

PAFMO · 26/10/2022 20:19

Bath would be my first choice. Beautiful, clean, safe. Great places to eat and drink, Bristol 11 minutes on the train if you want a more edgy night out.
Oxford and Cambridge are a bit like Florence and Venice. Stunning, but risk losing their identity because if tourism.
Exeter has really (IMO) taken a nosedive in the last twenty years. I worked there in 1996 and loved it. Went earlier this year and thought it was a dump. Soulless high street full of discount shops and fast food outlets. Really shocked me.

Manchester, it’s cheaper than Bristol or London, has 3 universities, so geared up for young people. Big enough for decent job opportunities, small enough to not be overwhelming. Peak District on your doorstep. London is great if you have the money but otherwise not worth the grind.

Badger1970 · 26/10/2022 20:24

I live in the South West. Bath is one of my favourite cities. Bristol is def the poor relation in comparison.

And agree with the PP that Exeter is an absolute dump.

SuperCamp · 26/10/2022 20:31

Manchester, Leeds, Bristol

London, but the accommodation costs are very high. Otherwise, loads of free stuff going on.

whiteroseredrose · 26/10/2022 20:37

I'd go for Bristol. I've lived in London, Manchester, Leeds and Bristol and Bristol was my favourite.

I covered Bristol and Bath as a rep so socialised a lot in both. Bath was classier and more grown up.

The devil is in the detail though. All of those places have lovely areas and awful ones.

emmathedilemma · 27/10/2022 07:15

Well Cheshire isn’t a city so strike that one off the list!
i’d go for Newcastle, it’s cheaper than a lot of cities, good train links on the east coast mainline, easy access to the coast and great nightlife.

boobot1 · 27/10/2022 07:18

York, lovely city

LizBuin · 27/10/2022 07:22

Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Lincoln

thedevilinablackdress · 27/10/2022 07:28

Why are they moving (work, study?) What sort of accommodation will they need to get (buy, rent, houseshare)? What is their financial situation generally? What do they like to do in their free time?

theDudesmummy · 27/10/2022 07:33

London for a young person 100%.

VeganGordie · 31/10/2022 13:29

Hi, I know this isnt a city but if your looking for somewhere affordable and full of rural areas then somewhere in Yorkshire would be a lovely place. I live in Yorkshire theres so many different cities and towns to visit, I cam across Enjoy Yorkshire the other day, this websiye will give you a good insight into Yorkshire:)

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 31/10/2022 13:38

Bristol over bath any day of the week. Bath is dull dull dull.

What about Sheffield? That would be my second choice over Bristol.

parts of London are nice but the smog / commuting / CoL Is all awful

This.
Also, is it only England, as if not, Glasgow is a great city, as is Edinburgh.

threegoodthings · 31/10/2022 13:41

Paignton

Crikeyalmighty · 31/10/2022 13:45

This really depends on the 'young person' - they aren't all the same. I've lived all over but different strokes for different people- I much prefer Bath to Bristol- have lived in both - but then even when a lot younger I would have preferred Bath - my choices would be Liverpool(love Liverpool) , Leeds, Newcastle, Bristol, Manchester ,london (if you can afford a decent area to live) Brighton

If you like smaller but punch above their weight with lots going on I would pick Bath, Guildford, Nottingham ,Norwich, York

TomTraubertsBlues · 31/10/2022 13:47

Cheshire?!?!? What the fuck?

You appear to have omitted all northern cities, and Scotland etc, but included a random bit of the north which is not a city. Why on earth would Cheshire be particularly attractive to young people?

TomTraubertsBlues · 31/10/2022 13:49

Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow would all be on my list.

TomTraubertsBlues · 31/10/2022 13:50

And yes - Liverpool

virginqueen · 31/10/2022 13:54

Norwich is a great place to live. Lots going on - for kids and adults, plenty of green spaces and not far from the coast.

TottersBlankly · 31/10/2022 14:01

‘Young’ people generally have to be in a particular place for education, training or work. So what would your reason for relocating be?

The thing is, without any such connection it would be hard to establish oneself. Even if the individual works exclusively from home they’d need something to ground them in their environment.

Anyway … Do not choose London unless you truly have enough money or earning potential to be carefree. It is not a nice place to be poor.

Edinburgh, on the other hand can be extreme fun even if you’re penniless.

MaggieFS · 31/10/2022 14:04

How young and what do they enjoy doing?

JohnsShirt · 31/10/2022 15:56

If they enjoy music where the acts play in big arenas/stadiums, then take that into consideration.
If you're talking about Uni, then think about the costs, and that lots of students live at home in London, because it's so expensive.
