Vent: I don't want to share a bed with my teenage son, thank you

Looking for 1 nights accommodation so I enter our details - 1 adult, 1 child (13), 1 room. You can drill down and select the number of beds, but so many sites list all this hits with just a double bed. Why are they assuming that and adult and a child will share a bed?
I mean I would if we had to, I don't have anything against it, and we'd just laugh and make a pillow wall, but it does seem an odd default.

And fuck me, it's expensive!

I totally respect your choice, but sharing a bed with my 13 year old wouldn’t bother me at all!

When my son was 15 he would occasionally sneak into my bed in the middle of the night.

TheOrigRights · 22/10/2022 21:50

OK, but that's not the usual default when booking a room with a teenage son I don't think.

Just book a twin room. Most hotels have them as a basic option.

TheOrigRights · 22/10/2022 21:52

and if you ran a hotel, is that the default you would choose?

This doesn’t bother me as much as most of the family rooms on holiday are double sofa beds. My teen g/b children don’t want to share a bed!
Most hotels have twin rooms which most of the time are harder for them to fill then doubles.

Yes, I know what to book, I'm going through Trip Advisor and such sites - I don't know the area at all.

Booking dot com definitely shows you room choices clearly in the search

Stopsnowing · 22/10/2022 22:12

Seems to me most holiday accomm has double beds rather than twin.

MilliwaysUniverse · 22/10/2022 22:15

I found myself sharing a bed with 21yo DS this year - I'd requested a twin but the hotel had cocked up the reservation and none were available. Luckily it was only for the one night because he is such a restless sleeper!

TheOrigRights · 22/10/2022 23:21

I would feel more comfortable sharing a bed with my 23 yo son (no idea if he's a restless sleeper though!), as we are both adults and would just get on with it.

Many search engines will let you choose the number of beds. Of just select a double room then scroll down and they usually have Twin rooms or family rooms ( with a bed and a sofa).

thelionthewitchtheaudacityofTHISbitch · 22/10/2022 23:51

I absolutely get this. I am a single parent with a now late teenage son. We are not having 2 rooms and I want my own bed. A few years ago we stayed at the loveliest hotel - my son ended up on a zed-bed. He would no longer fit by a mile!! I have told the hotel repeatedly (in proper reviews and private emails) that we can no longer stay there due to their policy of fixed double beds. They have chosen (despite many fake social media promises to fix it) to not change their beds. So all of their accommodation is either double beds or a family room. So we dont go. Their loss.

Same with holidays abroad. Luckily many hotels offer 2 double beds. That is great. We manage privacy with the bathroom.

Kanaloa · 23/10/2022 00:11

I think you just have to search for twin rooms. You’d think it’s common sense that a mum and teen son don’t want to share a bed but you need to remember these online servers don’t have common sense! They just input info and output info.

TheOrigRights · 23/10/2022 01:56

I did say in my OP that you can drill down and enter bed number, it's just that the default puts an adult and 13 year old in a bed together.

I booked a multi city holiday for our family of 4 and accommodation was such a PITA to search because of this. Some sites allow you to select number of beds but some don’t. The default for 2 x adults and 2 x teenage kids should be a double and 2 singles, not 2 doubles and not a double and a sofa bed. Don’t get me started on the hotel rooms that only had one king size bed - are we meant to all squash in together? Just made the process so much longer having to scroll through all the completely unsuitable options. Every site asks for the age of the kids, I wish they would use that info to filter the results!

MavisChunch29 · 23/10/2022 03:01

There should be a twin room option. Many people travel with someone they are happy to share a room with but would prefer their own beds.

That's true. It's interesting.
I would have thought the search algorithm would go:
Adult and 13 year old = 2 beds, rather than Adult and 13 year old = double bed.
I know how to search for what I need, I was just surprised.

I have a 13yr old DS. I don't mind sharing with his at all, but he's a solid sleeper not a fidgeter, so not a problem.

Swissnotswiss · 23/10/2022 13:37

I get this. Related, I booked a family room for dh, me and 12 year old twins(girl and boy) and we had 2 double beds! I thought this was a bit strange but I guess I didn't ask so my fault. They were ok with it but I asked if there was another room available (no). What DID majorly piss me off is that the manager said in front of them "oh you two can't share a bed that would be weird". 🙄

WhatsitWiggle · 23/10/2022 13:49

Imagine you're a family of 4, 2 adults and two children of the same sex aged 11 and 9. You'd be happy with your two children sharing a double sofa bed.
Now say your children are a boy age 11 and a girl age 9. Perhaps you're not happy with them sharing the double sofa bed.

How is the algorithm meant to know the difference when all it asks is number of people and ages? It's up to you to discard options that aren't suitable for your precise needs.

WakingUpDistress · 23/10/2022 13:53

I get it @TheOrigRights
i have no issue Sharing with one if my dcs (but I suspect the eldest wouldn’t be that keen!). But the option are more often than not a double bed rather twin. It’s the assumption that 2 pers=a couple and if there is a child then they are with mum and dad.

WhatsitWiggle · 23/10/2022 13:53

UK hotel rooms are also small, many can only fit a double bed and not a zip & link. Chain hotels are more likely to have zip & link due to brand standards and a tendency towards purpose built hotels especially in big cities.

Shockmeafter · 23/10/2022 13:55

I hate sleeping with my 8 year old as she kicks me so I book a twin or a double with a sofa or flat bed
