Spending a few days in York, always wanted to visit. What are the places we shouldn't miss, and any recommendations for eating please.
Tia.

I’ve always loved the Castle Museum; recently went to the Art Gallery which was excellent (and free)

Book your evening meals would be my top tip! It's a very busy city, and you may struggle for bookings otherwise.

When are you visiting?

uggmum · 11/10/2022 14:45

Cresci pizza restaurant really is the loveliest pizza in York.

Apart from that it's nice to hire a boat and sail down the river.

Lots of other lovely suggestions on here

Next Sunday. Have booked Sunday evening. Looking around for breakfast recommendations as well if anyone has any. Thanks.

The cafe was lovely too.

Thank you everyone, this has definitely wetted my appetite in every sense of the word.

Sorry, do you mean 23rd? If so, you might want to book for this - I went to the last one they did, it really was quite special.

Brew and Brownie are nice for breakfast, as is Mannions. If you can nab a table at the hairy fig it's really lovely for a coffee and slice of cake - it really is tiny though!

Museum gardens are lovely for a stroll this time of year, as is a walk along the river towards Rowntrees park, through the park to Bishopthorpe road area, which has lots of nice little cafes.

Another little hidden gem (sorry!) is round the back of the minster, Grays Court - you can usually pop in for a drink, and the gardens are lovely to sit in if the weather is good.

Grrrpredictivetex · 11/10/2022 16:13

I see we should have booked for longer 😭

I did see this @Pootles34 but starts when we've left. Thank you anyway.

Might be too short notice to book but Roots is Tommy Banks' place in the city itself to eat.

We quite enjoyed the ride on the tourist boats, the commentary was interesting.
There are self drive boats too.
We like Betty’s for the olde worlde charm but it is expensive. Lately we have done the lunch special at lavecchiascuola.co.uk/set-lunch-menu/ if you can get a seat in the conservatory it overlooks the cathedral and some gardens and it’s lovely.
Walk the walls. Just walk the whole city really as it’s small, do Shambles and Low Petergate (buy fudge at the specialty fudge shop). Some nice galleries with art to buy scattered round the city. Nice department store Browns.
Quite often there’s stuff going off on Parliament Street, food fairs etc.
Enjoy

Are the ghost tours too scary for children?

It depends on the child. If they love Horrible Histories, it would probably go down a treat. It's a while since we have been on one, so wouldn't like to recommend unreservedly for a sensitive child.

There's a Wizarf Walk too, aimed at kids.

Mordenmum85 · 27/05/2023 16:50

Thanks for the posts- we opted for DIG, which he loved and a surprising hit was the york castle museum! ds got a little freaked out in the cells, so I’m glad I skipped the ghost tour!
