Could anyone please tell me - where is a good holiday base for walks from the door, a pub in walking distance in maybe a little bit of a small town/village (but not essential). The main thing is walks from the door and a picturesque area. Thank you!

Forgot to say - coastal or not far from is what I am thinking.

Have a look at Warkworth, Alnmouth, Craster.

DesMoulinsRouge · 06/10/2022 08:04

Beadnell is nice, there's a pub and it's not far from Seahouses which has a supermarket and a few places to eat.

There are some lovely Northumberland coastal villages - Bamburgh, Low Newton, Alnmouth, Craster, Embleton and Warkworth. The last two aren't right by the sea, but an easy walk away.

All of them have coastal walks from the villages, although if you were there for more than a few days you would probably exhaust the walks you could do without having to get in a car.

mrsrobin · 06/10/2022 08:31

Thanks for your replies - we will have a car but just like not to use it every day. I will investigate your suggestions thank you.

Alnmouth is beautiful, right on the beach and a couple of decent pubs, a chippy, and a deli sort of cafe / bistro place. 10min drive into Alnmouth for bigger shops.

emmathedilemma · 06/10/2022 10:41

This company are good if you want self catering www.northumbria-cottages.co.uk/

mrsrobin · 06/10/2022 12:27

@emmathedilemma Thanks for that - do you mean Alnmouth to stay in with a 10 minute drive to ...? I will check out the cottages website thank you :)

emmathedilemma · 06/10/2022 12:29

sorry, 10min drive to Alnwick from Alnmouth

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/10/2022 12:30

Probably means Alnwick

Take warm clothing! The coldest Christmas I still remember from childhood was visiting relatives in Northumberland at Christmas. The house was warm, loads of coal fires, but outside was unbelievably cold and snowy. Think Arctic.

mrsrobin · 24/10/2022 19:21

@Beebumble2 LOL! Arctic!!! Yes I will have plenty of warm clothes!

I’d say Beadnell fits the bill for you, beautiful beach and a couple of cosy pubs.

Myjobisanightmare · 28/10/2022 17:12

Garden rooms of newton hall?

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/10/2022 17:13

All of it.

Hexham
Corbridge
Hayden Bridge

Pinkbananas01 · 28/10/2022 17:15

Beadnell, lovely pub, beach village with small shop for essentials. Walk I g distance to Seahouses which has most shops & loads of restauraunts, takeaways etc. Lovely beach for walking

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/10/2022 17:19

Just seen you said coastal. Alnmouth and Amble, Warkworth, anywhere near Dunstanburgh. Lindasfarne?

Partey · 28/10/2022 17:21

Kielder is beautiful

mrsrobin · 28/10/2022 19:41

Thanks for all the input - we actually booked a lovely cottage on the side of a hill with views over the valley on the edge of Warkworth. Is close to the coast but chose there in the end as is good for walking on the hills and we are walkers.

It's all nice - it really is (in my opinion) the nicest place in England.
....although having just said that avoid Prudhoe or Blyth!

Hexham, corbridge and the Tyne alley is gorgeous.

Allendale is beautiful. Very remote but very arty and musical. New Years there is amazing (Google it).

And then there is Morpeth and the coast which is also stunning.

ChefCheese · 29/10/2022 11:58

You'll love Warkworth. Enjoy!

DisforDarkChocolate · 31/10/2022 16:25

Lovely chocolate shop in Warkworth and the ice cream at www.morwickdairy.co.uk/ is the best I have ever eaten (and I've eaten a lot).
