UK Coach holidays

Next summer DH and I have booked to go on our first coach holiday travelling from the east of England to north Wales for 4 nights. I can' wait to go and see some of the sights I have wanted to see for years and this feels like a nice way to do it with it all being organised for us and no driving to worry about.

I was wondering if there are any seasoned coach holidayers who have any words of wisdom or tips and suggestions about how to best enjoy it?

Oh, how disappointing there are no responses here. I have just booked a coach holiday to Scotland for Sept 23 as I don"t fancy the long drive on my own. I was inspired by watching the Queens funeral car being driven through some wonderful countryside.

Haven’t done many UK coach holidays but have done many abroad.
Pack light as you will have to take suitcase in and out of hotel.
Always get back to the coach on time.
Smile and be friendly to other passengers.
Wear layers so you can take them off on the coach if too warm.
Keep a bottle of water with you.
If you use them, take headphones and have a book or music on your phone for long journeys.
Relax and enjoy yourself.

How old are you? From what I’ve seen , if you’re under 70 you’ll stand out!

CuriousMama · 11/12/2022 15:48

I've been on a few and love them. Not everyone is over 70 🙄. I've been going since dcs were young. Ds2 and I went to IOW on one. He was only 19 and loved it. Granted he was very young compared to everyone in that one. I've just been again with Dh and I was one of the youngest but we had a great time. What does it matter how old everyone is?
Have an amazing time. No driving or worrying about parking. Food catered for. And you get to see beautiful scenery.

Iluvfriends · 11/12/2022 15:57

I go on quite a few coach trips and I'm not near 70 fgs.
Me and my partner go to concerts etc with travel company by coach so really only ever 1 or 2 night stays.

Be on time for the coach, it's a pain waiting on stragglers. If there's a few stops and there's stragglers at every stop it eats away at everyone's time.

Take the opportunity to stretch your legs when it arises.

Sit back and enjoy being a passenger.

Thank you all, I'm glad to have responses even a while later. :)

We are mid to late 40s but given that we honeymooned at a Warners back in our 20s (I had only just turned 20, in fact) we are not fussed about being out of step age wise.

Layers and a water bottle sound very sensible. I am very punctual, DH is hit and miss but I will make sure he knows how important it is.

After years of family holidays, mostly self catering, it will hopefully be lovely to enjoy the freedom of adult children and not having to plan activities and meals.

Thank @charabang for resurrecting. I'm sorry I hadn't seen your post.
You'll have a great time 🙂

Hi, if you are interested in coach trips/tours to Scotland have a look at Lochs & Glens www.lochs.com. They have 6 of their own hotels, mainly around Loch Lomond and Trossachs national park. Great value, excellent customer service - no quibble refunds during Covid. Like a pp the Queens funeral procession on the TV showed the amazing scenery. L&G pick up through most of England, not sure about Wales. A fellow coach tripper several years under 70!

Nice thread. Never been on a coach hols in the uk or abroad.
Would love to.
Covid puts me off and I know this is silly but becuase we are Asain, I feel that some of the old timers may not get on with us. We are quiet/reserved in public, don't some etc.
Our hols have been family hols, never done more than the same day return in England. Went to wales for a day trip with family but beeen to th the USA more than 10 times, France about 20, Amsterdam 2 times, Germany once, Indain about 5 times and pakistan/japan/Australia/fiji and mexico once.

Would love a coach hol all-inclusive looked hard but diff to find local one

Abigail69 · 29/12/2022 23:17

local one at no more than about 5/600 hundred all ic per person with some day trips inc preferably cornwall/Wales as never been to Cornwall.

It is a nice thread and I found it helpful as well.

CuriousMama · 29/12/2022 23:35

@Abigail69 maybe try a short trip if you're unsure? I'd definitely talk to you if I was on a coach trip. You'd be sick of me 🤣 I'm northern though we're known for friendliness. Plus have a diverse multicultural family so am not frightened to mix with anyone from any culture. I like to learn about them.
I hope you give it ago? They usually all do breakfast and dinner with option of packed lunch. Or eat lunch when out?

CuriousMama · 29/12/2022 23:35

A go*

The queen’s funeral procession didn’t go anywhere near Loch Lomond and the trossachs!

Oh I do hope you try it, I hate the idea that ethnicity might be an issue but I do understand why it could be a concern for you.

I've just had a thought and wondered if any of you knowledgeable people could help.

What is the tipping protocol for coach holidays? Does it tend to be the same driver/s the whole time and if so do you wait until the drop off home and how much is normal to give?

Also, I have never been sure about what and when at hotels with food included, I am afraid we have been more self catering holiday types.

OP posts:
CuriousMama · 07/01/2023 17:25

Same driver. I always tip not everyone does.

Abracadabra12345 · 10/01/2023 20:59

The one thing I worry about is that you spend the majority of your time on the coach and the minimum amount of time exploring the lovely places you visit

You don't have to go on the trips. We only went on one trip on the tour we went on recently. Did our own thing. Walked and got the bus. Very relaxing.

Agree, whilst a lot of excursions are included in the cost of the coach holiday itself, you don't have to do them! We also spent most of our time exploring the area around the hotel on our own, it was a lovely few days. Do your research before booking
